THE ORGANIZATION 

With a lean, loyal, and productive team of 24 employees, this Local Distribution Company (LDC), or ‘the Utility,’ distributes power and related services inside the Town of Wasaga Beach, a vibrant community with an ever-growing population. The present population is more than 25,000 and comprises a total service area of 61 square kilometres. The Utility serves approximately 16,000 residential and commercial customers. 

The Town of Wasaga Beach is one of the fastest-growing communities in Ontario. 

JOB OVERVIEW 

The Financial Services Accountant plays a pivotal role in managing full cycle accounting processes, including payroll, account reconciliations, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and inventory management. This position ensures the accurate and timely processing of financial transactions, compliance with company policies, and adherence to regulations. The ideal candidate will demonstrate meticulous attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the capability to efficiently handle multiple responsibilities. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Reporting to the Manager of Finance and Regulatory, the Financial Services Accountant responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

Payroll Management

  • Manage the full cycle payroll process for union, non-union, management, and Board of Directors, maintaining accurate payroll records.
  • Perform all related payroll administration including benefit management that include OMERS and MEARIE. Generate payroll reports as required.
  • Conduct annual preparation of T4’s and T4A’s as well as monthly/quarterly/annual reconciliations for EFT, WSIB, Form 119 for OMERS. 

Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable

  • Generate and issue invoices for all work orders and jobs for associated companies.
  • Record and process incoming payments, ensuring accuracy and proper allocation.
  • Follow up on overdue accounts and implement collection procedures to recover outstanding balances.
  • Receive, verify, and process vendor invoices, ensuring proper documentation and authorization.
  • Prepare and execute payment runs.
  • Communicate with vendors to resolve any billing or payment issues. 

General Accounting Duties

  • Monitor and maintain accurate inventory records, ensuring all stock levels are up to date.
  • Ensure timely and accurate month-end close procedures for accounts, including preparation of journal entries, posting of recurring and non-recurring journal entries, and the preparation and analysis of monthly account reconciliations, all in accordance with IFRS reporting standards.
  • Maintenance of related systems and ERP modules to ensure accurate record keeping, while meeting regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Support annual external audit processes.
  • Provide backup support for Customer Service, as required.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

EDUCATION/PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Post secondary education in accounting, finance, business administration. Payroll Compliance Professional designation would be considered an asset.
  • Minimum 3 years related experience in an accounting environment and 1-2 years of direct payroll-related experience.
  • Previous experience in a utility would be considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in accounting/payroll software and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
  • Solid understanding of basic accounting principles and practices.
  • Strong understanding of payroll regulations, tax laws, and compliance requirements.
