What You Will do:

The Protection and Control Engineer / Engineering-in-Training will play a critical role in ensuring the operational excellence and reliability of GrandBridge Energy’s grid infrastructure. Reporting to the Manager, Grid Operations & Reliability, this position focuses on optimizing and leveraging grid control systems (SCADA, ADMS, OMS) and associated protection and control devices to enhance grid performance and reliability.

This role is ideal for a versatile, technology- and people-oriented individual who thrives in a dynamic environment and can adapt to the evolving needs of the energy industry. As a key contributor to GrandBridge Energy’s grid modernization initiatives, you will work on impactful projects that modernize the grid, improve reliability, and support the integration of advanced grid edge solutions.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform load flow studies, fault analysis, and protection coordination to support system planning and operational decision-making.
  • Optimize the use of grid control systems (SCADA, ADMS, OMS) and related devices (switches, reclosers, regulators, capacitors, etc.) to enhance operational efficiency and reliability.
  • Monitor, analyze, and evaluate the performance of protection and control systems, ensuring compliance with operational standards and best practices.
  • Support the operation and maintenance of substations, focusing on protection systems and ensuring safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Investigate and resolve protection system issues, including device mis-operations and coordination challenges.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to implement reliability improvement initiatives, including grid-edge solutions and distributed energy resource integration.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of outage performance improvement programs by analyzing event data and identifying opportunities for system enhancements.
  • Assist in compliance activities, such as audits and documentation processes, ensuring adherence to all regulatory, safety, and operational requirements.
  • Provide technical expertise to cross-functional teams on protection and control system projects and studies.
  • Stay informed about advancements in protection and control technologies, recommending updates or new tools to align with industry best practices and organizational goals.

What You Will Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Eligible for or working toward Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation with Professional Engineers of Ontario is preferred.
  • 1-3 years of experience in utility operations, grid reliability, or a related field, with a focus on protection and control systems and devices.
  • Demonstrated expertise in performing load flow studies, fault analysis, and protection coordination.
  • Familiarity with advanced grid technologies, including SCADA, ADMS, OMS, and FLISR, and their application in optimizing grid operations.
  • Knowledge of protection and control devices (relays, breakers, transformers, etc.) and their operational principles.
  • Understanding of Ontario’s electricity landscape, regulatory requirements, and reliability standards, including ESA, OESC, UWPC, and IESO Reliability reporting.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with a detail-oriented approach to system evaluation and troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency in operational tools and software (e.g., MS Office, power system analysis tools, SCADA applications).
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
  • A commitment to fostering a culture of safety, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to adapt to the changing needs of the role while contributing to the organization’s energy transition goals.
