Distribution Engineer

Reporting to the Supervisor, Supply Planning and Asset Management, this position is responsible for data analysis, modeling, and providing actionable insights to maintain an effective asset investment and supply planning decisions. The successful candidate will provide data management analysis, support, and use of tools related to asset management and will support the System Planning and Customer Connections Manager in updating and executing the asset management strategy that supports the Company’s short and long-term goals.  This position will also support the development and management of technical standards for the asset management system as well as all areas of the electrical distribution system. 

Note that this position will be based out of our Country Squire office in Waterloo.

  • Advanced data analytics and business intelligence skills, experience with data visualization (e.g., Power BI), statistical or programming tools (e.g., Python, R)
  • Advanced project management and organizational skills
  • Advanced ability to investigate problems, draw insights, and recommend solutions to improve operational effectiveness
  • Advanced interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, with a strong focus on the ability to interact effectively with team members and a variety of stakeholders.
  • Advanced MS Office skills, expert MS Excel skills and relational database skills
  • Ability to communicate outcome of analytics through insightful and clearly understandable reports and presentations with an emphasis on the ability to communicate complex investment analysis to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to research, learn and implement constantly evolving technical and construction solutions and best practice methods
  • Intermediate time management and planning skills including the ability to multitask
  • Ability to interpret codes, standards, regulations and prepare technical standards

Education/Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree or Technologist diploma in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Licensed (or eligible for) P. Eng. in good standing with the Professional Engineers of Ontario
  • Knowledge of Utility Asset Management Software
  • Knowledge of OEB codes, ESA Distribution Safety Regulations, and regulations pertaining to distribution systems (CSA, ANSI, USF, IESO, UWPC, utility standards and Conditions of Service)
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical distribution systems including design, technical requirements, equipment, implementation and testing
  • Advanced knowledge of data and system integration concepts
  • Intermedium knowledge of conducting distribution system analysis like load flow, short-circuit and distribution system optimization
  • Intermedium knowledge of assessing distribution asset condition, developing and enhancing asset management strategy to maximize the return on investment
  • Intermedium knowledge of installation, operation, and maintenance of DER systems
  • Intermediate knowledge of financial valuations and regulatory accounting principles
  • Basic knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety requirements as it relates to individual, organizational and operational requirements

Experience

  • 3 - 5 years’ related experience in an electrical utility
  • Professional experience in use of statistics and economics for decision support
  • Valid Class “G” Driver’s Licence

Major (Primary) Responsibilities

  • Capital & Maintenance Budgets: Assist in the development of decision frameworks, business processes and tools for capital and maintenance budget development, optimization, prioritization, risk analysis, levels of service level and lifecycle costing. Develop models/tools to assist in the analysis of condition and investment scenarios.
  • Asset Management Performance: Monitor asset management performance measures, benchmarking and maintenance standards. Perform data analysis to discover insights from asset data and provide regular updates to Senior Management for use in annual capital and maintenance program budgets and regulatory reporting. Performing scenario analyses, risk assessments, and supporting the development of investment strategies based on data-driven insights. Update and refine Health Index frameworks to improve predictive accuracy of asset performance.
  • Technology & Continuous Improvement: Utilize asset management software (ENGIN) for forecasting to support reliability centric activities and investments.

Expand asset classes in ENGIN, configure and utilize additional functionality available in asset management software along with integrations/automations where efficiencies can be realized.

Spearhead implementation of new or improved data collection tools for asset classes. Streamline data integration with relevant company software (e.g. GIS).

Ongoing software and data updates for existing asset classes implemented in asset management software. Contributes to the evaluation or creation of new analytical approaches and technologies to further advance Enova’s ability to make more risk efficient investment decisions.

  • Materials: Identifies new materials to be used in the design, construction, and maintenance of the distribution system.
  • Analysis, Reporting & Inspections: Assisting in asset demography, load forecasting and reliability analysis to optimize system capacity and asset management. QA/QC of utility inspection, maintenance and testing data used in the asset management process. Perform ad-hoc analysis and reporting (such as asset health, reliability metrics, and capacity constraints) as required. Co-ordinates and maintains the development of technical documentation and standards, including but not limited to, overhead and underground distribution and asset management. Provides technical support and expertise of overhead and underground distribution standards.
  • Safety: Support Corporate Occupational Health & Safety initiatives by incorporating safe work practices into daily work routine and reporting any unsafe conditions or work practices to supervisor.
