 Stations & Grid Intelligence Engineer

This position reports to the Stations & SCADA Engineering Supervisor and is responsible for performing and assisting in the specification, design and management of stations construction projects and programmable distribution devices. The incumbent must ensure work is completed in accordance with acceptable standards and that activities are completed in a safe, timely and efficient manner. They provide support to the control and communication systems (SCADA /ADMS /OMS /SONET /RF) and oversee the connection of new generators. In addition, the incumbent assists Stations Protection & Control, Metering, and System Operators on more complex operational issues.


Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

  • Intermediate skills in MS Office, and various engineering applications
  • Intermediate project management and organizational skills
  • Ability to apply critical thinking skills and troubleshoot technical challenges
  • Ability to analyze problems, investigate and implement solutions and resolve conflict
  • Intermediate verbal and written communication skills, to provide clear direction on work priorities and expectations
  • Advanced skills in the use of hardware and software for communications, SCADA, ADMS, cybersecurity and protection and control systems.
  • Ability to plan, execute, administer capital projects and mitigate the associated risk
  • Ability to foster strong business relationships with internal staff, customers, developers, municipalities, authorities, and other stakeholders
  • Ability to plan, design, review, approve drawings, engineering studies and various reports, including recommendations
  • Ability to interpret codes, standards, regulations and prepare tender documents 
  • Ability to direct work to ensure consistency with the objectives of the organization

Experience/Education     

  • Bachelor of Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Three to five years’ experience in an electrical utility
  • Licenced Professional Engineer (P.Eng)
  • Class G Driver’s Licence
  • Applicants with less experience working towards a P.Eng. designation may be considered

Major (Primary) Responsibilities

  • Advanced knowledge of the Electrical Safety Authority Distribution Safety Regulations and Ontario Energy Board Codes, safety, regulatory, and technical codes and standards pertaining to stations, generation, and programmable distribution devices
  • Advanced understanding of how to perform power systems analysis
  • Advanced knowledge of Power Engineering (station design, protection, control, metering)
  • Advanced knowledge of SCADA, radio frequency principles, communication systems, networking and cybersecurity
  • Advanced knowledge of maintenance and testing procedures for transformer station equipment, distribution equipment, control and communication systems
  • Basic knowledge of Meter Data Management System (MV90)
  • Basic knowledge of the Employment Standards Act
  • Basic knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety requirements as it relates to the individual, organizational and operational requirements
