ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION DESIGNER

FULL-TIME MANAGEMENT POSITION

 

Niagara Peninsula Energy Inc. (NPEI) is seeking a qualified individual to join our management team in the position of Electrical Distribution Designer. This position is an in-office role working out of our corporate office located in Niagara Falls, with occasional travel to our Smithville office. Reporting to the Manager of Engineering, the Electrical Distribution Designer provides technical support to the engineering group for various utility initiatives, capital projects, contract and tender reviews and the maintenance and operation of distribution assets.

 Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Engage in activities and conduct research to ensure a sound understanding of NPEI’s engineering systems, distribution standards and the electrical distribution industry.
  • Prepare equipment approval sheets for electrical distribution equipment in compliance with O.Reg.22-04.
  • Update NPEI’s book of standards and cost estimating system to reflect any changes and additions implemented by USF.
  • Review NPEI specific design standards and deviations from USF standards, ensuring compliance with relevant CSA standards per Ont. Reg. 22/04.
  • Review joint use and third party attachments to ensure compliance with Ont. Reg. 22/04.
  • Review fuse and relay coordination to ensure proper coordination within the NPEI system.
  • Coordinate and develop maintenance or replacement routines for NPEI owned assets.
  • Investigate power quality complaints and work to resolve customer issues related to the NPEI distribution system.
  • Monitor technological advances and develop NPEI Smart Grid projects.
  • Prepare Connection Impact Assessments (CIAs) for proposed embedded generation connecting to NPEI’s distribution system.
  • Model proposed new loads or generation and perform load flow and short circuit analysis to ensure optimal configuration of NPEI’s distribution system
  • Ensure that generation facilities and protection designs are consistent with NPEI standards and requirements.
  • Prepare Threshold Allocation (TA) applications to Hydro One for connecting embedded generation.
  • Prepare connection cost estimates and offers to connect for new commercial & generator requests that will connect to NPEI’s system.
  • Perform witness tests on connecting generation.

 Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • University Degree or College Diploma in Electrical Engineering.
  • Working towards registration with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) to obtain Professional Engineering license.
  • Work experience, cooperative education placement, or, student work in an electrical utility is an asset.
  • Proficient with the use of Microsoft Office, GIS, AutoCAD and systems used for distribution design, modelling and management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with teams, customers, stakeholders, and present complex technical information clearly.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions, plan and organize projects and assume accountability for performance.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and utilize problem solving techniques to derive solutions.
  • Strong attention to detail and understanding of process flows relating to proper documentation and reporting.
  • Exceptional organizational abilities and time management skills.

Courtesy, tact and diplomacy are required in dealing with colleagues in every day working relationships.  The rate of pay will be subject to the Management Salary Schedule and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
