The Role

We are looking for a dedicated individual to join our team as a Substation Electrician (Journeyperson/Apprentice). Reporting to the Supervisor, Station Maintenance, this position plays a key role in testing, installing, and maintaining substation equipment, as well as performing cable testing, fault locating for underground systems, transformer testing, and electrical maintenance. All work must be performed in accordance with company work practices, standards, and all applicable legislation and regulations, including those under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).

Candidates hired at the apprentice level will perform work appropriate to their training and experience and will assume increasing responsibility as they progress through the program under the guidance of the Supervisor and qualified team members. The successful candidate must be enrolled in, or willing to enroll in, and successfully complete the MEARIE Substation Electrician certification program, including all required training and hours. Upon completion, the individual will be recognized as a certified journeyperson.

This is an on-site, unionized position based at 1340 Brant Street, Burlington, governed by the applicable collective agreement. The role is being posted to fill an existing vacancy at Burlington Hydro and may be filled at the Journeyperson or Apprentice level, with compensation commensurate with qualifications and experience.

What You Will Do

  • Install, repair, and maintain substation equipment
  • Perform electrical and mechanical testing on substation equipment
  • Conduct routine maintenance and inspections of breakers, protection relays, battery chargers, and batteries
  • Maintain main office and substation buildings as part of regular upkeep
  • Investigate and troubleshoot substation faults and equipment failures
  • Install, maintain, and repair AC and DC substation service systems
  • Test and maintain distribution transformers
  • Collect scheduled and periodic substation data and maintain accurate equipment and maintenance records
  • Perform cable testing, locating, and fault locating of underground systems
  • Respond to emergency and on-call situations as required
  • Recalibrate protective devices, substation SCADA and System Intelligent Devices and System Network Configuration
  • Perform Protection and Control (P&C) work, including installation, programming, troubleshooting, and interrogation of intelligent electronic devices (IEDs)
  • Work with feeder protection relays, remote switching intelligence, inter-communications, calibrations, graphics editing, and commissioning of existing and new SCADA devices
  • Review, update, and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings, prints, and diagrams using AutoCAD
  • All other duties as assigned 

What We Are Looking For

  • Electrical Engineering Technology diploma program from an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Certification as a Journeyperson Substation Electrician under the MEARIE Substation Electrician program (or equivalent) or the ability to complete the certification program requirements
  • Valid G Class Ontario driver’s licence with a clean abstract 

What You’ll Need to Be Successful

  • Proficiency in interpreting work orders, specifications, standards, and blueprints/drawings, with strong reading comprehension and mathematical skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact positively with employees, customers, and the public
  • Physical fitness to safely perform work, including climbing, working at heights, working in confined spaces, and outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Willingness and ability to participate in regular emergency call-outs, on-call rotation, and work under emergency conditions, with the ability to arrive on-site within one hour of being called
  • Proficiency with MS Office and the ability to learn new software and systems; familiarity with AutoCAD is an asset
  • Solid knowledge of industry regulations, standards, and best practices
  • Reliable, energetic, and motivated with a proven safety and attendance record
