The Role

We are looking for a dedicated individual to join our team as an Electrical Operator (Journeyperson/Apprentice). Reporting to the Supervisor, System Control, this role is essential to the safe, reliable, and efficient monitoring, control, and operation of Burlington Hydro’s electrical distribution system. All work must be performed in accordance with company work practices, standards, and all applicable legislation and regulations, including those under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).

Candidates hired at the apprentice level will perform work appropriate to their training and experience and will assume increasing responsibility as they progress through the program under the guidance of the Supervisor and qualified team members. The successful candidate must be enrolled in, or willing to enroll in, and successfully complete the MEARIE Electrical Operator certification program, including all required training and hours. Upon completion, the individual will be recognized as a certified journeyperson.

This is an on-site, unionized position based at 1340 Brant Street, Burlington, governed by the applicable collective agreement. The role is being posted to fill an existing vacancy at Burlington Hydro and may be filled at the Journeyperson or Apprentice level, with compensation commensurate with qualifications and experience.

What You Will Do

  • Monitor substations, lines, and loads within Burlington Hydro’s Sub Transmission and Distribution Systems
  • Maintain control of the system through daily operations, including monitoring, controlling, and directing the safe and efficient operation of the electrical distribution system
  • Prepare Work Protection Forms and Switching Orders and oversee switching operations for maintenance, construction, and repair work
  • Dispatch work crews and provide hold-offs on breakers to establish work protection
  • Field calls and communicate effectively with internal and external customers, other agencies, and authorities; coordinate system operations with Hydro One and neighbouring LDCs
  • Update system status in Geographic Information System (GIS) and maintain accurate departmental records
  • Enter data, log specific events, and prepare reports as they pertain to the Hydro system
  • Assist with maintenance duties, field work, and drawing verifications
  • Work in compliance with all safe work practices, rules, and regulations as set out by Burlington Hydro, the Ministry of Labour, and IHSA
  • All other duties as assigned 

What We Are Looking For

  • Electrical Engineering Technologist degree or diploma from an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Certification as a Journeyperson Electrical Operator under the MEARIE Electrical Operator program (or equivalent) or the ability to complete the certification program requirements
  • Utility Work Protection Code (UWPC) certification, or willingness to obtain certification
  • Valid Class G Ontario driver’s licence with a clean abstract
  • First Aid and CPR certification is an asset 

What You’ll Need to Be Successful

  • Demonstrated knowledge of System Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Customer Information System (CIS), Geographic Information System (GIS), and AutoCAD
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn new software and systems
  • Strong verbal, written, and mathematical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and teamwork abilities
  • Ability to stay composed under pressure and adapt to changing priorities
  • Willingness and ability to work on a rotating 24/7 shift schedule, 365 days of the year, and to be readily available for on-call and emergency duties, with the ability to arrive on-site within one hour of being called
  • Strong knowledge of industry regulations, standards, and best practices
  • Reliable, energetic, and motivated with a proven safety and attendance record
