2 vacancies exist in the Stations and Grid Intelligence department at our Country Squire location for the position of Apprentice Substation Electrician. 

Reporting to the P&C/Substation Electricians Supervisor, this position is responsible for the construction, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of power equipment, control and protection systems, communication systems and SCADA devices associated with transformer stations, distribution stations, the communication system, distribution automation, and controllable distribution devices and the underground network system.


Opportunity to transition to a Protection & Control Technologist / Substation Electrician role may be accessible upon completion of the Substation Electrician Apprenticeship.
 

Skills/Abilities

  • Intermediate verbal and written communication skills
  • Intermediate MS Office skills and use of corporate software as well as various test equipment software
  • Intermediate time management and planning skills with the ability to multitask and adapt to changing industry standards
  • Ability to deal with fellow employees and customers in a tactful, respectful and courteous manner
  • Intermediate testing capabilities with a variety of test equipment on power equipment
  • Intermediate problem solving, critical thinking and trouble shooting skills within differing situations
  • Intermediate ability to interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, sketches and engineering drawings and work from verbal and written instructions, specifications, and standards
  • Ability to participate in on call rotation and respond to emergency calls
  • Physically able to work on automation, protection, and control apparatus and heavy equipment under all conditions and environments
  • Ability to work in proximity to high voltage energized equipment
  • Demonstrated excellent safety skills 

Knowledge/Education

  • Post-secondary education in Electrical Engineering Technology or related discipline or equivalent gained through work experience
  • Preference will be given to  candidates with demonstrated experience in substations, substation maintenance, substation construction, protection and control systems, SCADA, utility electrical construction, or electrical utility operations
  • Construction and Maintenance Electrician certificate of qualification or equivalent is considered an asset
  • Advanced knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety requirements related to individual, organizational and operational requirements
  • Intermediate knowledge of Construction and Industrial regulations and relevant company policies and work procedures and any other applicable government legislation
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical trade tools, measurement and test equipment and their operation
  • Advanced knowledge of Electrical Utility Safety Rules, USF Standards and the ESA Distribution Safety Regulations applicable to the work
  • Advanced knowledge of Utility Work Protection Code
  • Intermediate knowledge of distribution system equipment and operation
  • Advanced knowledge of station related power equipment as well as associated operation, test and maintenance procedures
  • Basic knowledge of station related protection, control and communications apparatus 

Experience

  • 2 years’ relevant experience
  • Valid Class “D” driver’s license with Z endorsement minimum 

Major (Primary) Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain all equipment at transformer and distribution station facilities and network system, perform routine inspections, maintenance and testing of electrical and mechanical apparatus and associated auxiliary equipment using a variety of test equipment and methodologies.
  • Construct, install, wire, test and commission new equipment on all major components of a transformer station, distribution station, as well as protection, control and communication aspects of distribution automation equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair faulty station equipment, control systems, and distribution equipment, including network system.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and repairing of real time communication systems.
  • Construct wired & wireless communication systems at substations, repeater sites and in the distribution system, and distribution devices for the SCADA network.
  • Operate heavy equipment including trucks with trailers, aerial devices, mobile cranes, cable pulling equipment, and other motorized devices to provide for safe and efficient installations. Responsible for the care and minor maintenance on all tools and equipment.
  • Perform daily CVOR and aerial device inspections as required and report any defects.
  • Monitor performance and provide assistance and instruction to junior grades of employees.
  • Participate in Acting Supervisor as per collective agreement.
  • Adhere to Occupational Health & Safety activities for the organization to effectively promote a culture of health, safety and loss prevention.
  • Perform general housekeeping duties to maintain work sites and vehicles in a safe and clean state.
  • Perform traffic control, assist coworkers, contractors and other departments as necessary.
  • Complete the regularly scheduled cybersecurity awareness training. Maintain an awareness of the sensitivity of the data within the work environment. Keep passwords private. Report changes in user status. Report suspected security violations. Follow staff reporting structure to communicate if any concerns/issues/risks are identified. Follow physical security protocols.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Salary Range: $33.90 to $51.75 per hour.
