Engineering Technician

 

Grimsby Power is located in the Town of Grimsby, on the western edge of the Region of Niagara. Grimsby Power serves over 11,700 customers and is committed to providing the Town of Grimsby with an economical, safe and reliable supply of energy. 

Grimsby Power is looking for an Engineering Technician to be able to design the distribution infrastructure including all projects and connections. This position will provide information and technical services to the customers of the utility, or their agents, including, but not limited to, estimating costs of services and specifications for projects, transformer evaluation, site inspections, equipment testing and computer aided drafting. This includes both Engineering and Metering design and implementation.

 

The ideal candidate is one who has mastered the design of electrical equipment systems and who is prepared for a new challenge. If you aspire to take part in the design of distribution and station projects by utilizing computer applications, and are organized, detail oriented, and results focused then this position should be one of interest. 

Responsibilities:

  • Design of overhead and underground distribution system projects and connections using specifications and standards in a cost effective and safe manner.
  • Design, installation and maintenance of single and three-phase metering systems and exchanges for re-verifications.
  • Advise customers and electrical contractors of service and connection requirements for new installations and upgrades, i.e. consultants, contractors, owners.
  • Dispenses policy information when requested, specify transformers and evaluate transformer quotes and construction drawings for discrepancies.
  • Perform inspection of materials, field installations and workmanship, to ensure they meet Utility Specifications.
  • Make recommendations for specification improvements on all materials used in the construction and maintenance of distribution systems.
  • Assist in the estimating of capital and maintenance work including assisting in annual budgeting.
  • Utilize the GIS system to map and maintain mapping distribution system assets.
  • Maintain asset record database including new and update equipment records.
  • Co-ordinate some activities for Line staff and contractors, co-operate with all staff and departments.
  • Install system-testing devices on customer premises to establish characteristics and performance of system (Low Voltage only).
  • Customer problem solving as it pertains to General Service customers or Residential customers.
  • Troubleshooting of distribution systems faults and equipment failures.

The successful applicant will have the following minimum qualifications:

  • A minimum of two years of experience in an electrical engineering discipline involving design, construction, and commissioning of electrical equipment;
  • Possess an in depth knowledge of design standards and regulations pertaining to the electrical equipment area of expertise;
  • Proficient in GIS and at computer applications (MS Office, AutoCad);
  • Experience with distribution system modeling software (DESS is preferred);
  • Knowledge of protection and control and distribution automation is an asset 

Education Required Licenses or Special Requirements: 

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering;
  • Certified Engineering Technician (C.E.T.);
  • Valid Class G driver’s license with a clean abstract;
  • Post or continuing educational courses would be an asset
