POWERLINE TECH TRAINING & APPRENTICESHIP CONSULTANT – Posting #TO2013-07

LOCATION:  THUNDER BAY (Must reside within the district of Thunder Bay)

 

The Infrastructure Health and Safety Association (IHSA) is a customer-focused, market driven organization providing health and safety services representing interests in the fields of Construction, Transportation and the Electrical sectors. IHSA’s goal is to build strong partnerships with our clients and guide them in building sustainable health and safety strategies that create a culture of workplace health and safety. As a Powerline Tech Training & Apprenticeship Consultant, the incumbent will be responsible for assessing the health and safety training needs and providing skills based programs for high risk work.  The duties will include, but are not limited to scheduling, designing, delivering, recommending and evaluating training programs and course participants for clients  within Ontario and, at times, nationally and internationally for IHSA.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Deliver/facilitate health and safety programs and presentations that adhere to current Federal and/or Provincial legislation and support the policies, procedures, objectives and vision of IHSA. Instruct, observe and evaluate high risk occupations (“PLTN” apprenticeship/proficiencies) in high voltage live line work methods.
  • Prepare, present and facilitate technical papers and workshops to widely diversified audiences at Injury Prevention Seminars, trade conferences, technical conferences or other events.
  • Assist in the updating of Training Manuals, Rule Books, Safe Practice Guides, videos or other training materials.
  • Consult and work with stakeholders, member and non-member firms, management, various trade sectors, community colleges, industry suppliers and employer associations to build strong strategic partnerships to assess, identify and address their training needs through Gap Analysis. Design specialized and customized programs and courses to meet their needs.  Resolve challenges, continually monitor the effectiveness of existing programs and recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Act as an expert in a variety of trades related to high risk work activities. As a subject matter expert, maintain a high level of performance competence and expertise and maintain an up-to-date knowledge base of new equipment, techniques and occupational health and safety legislation with the federal and provincial sectors.
  • Schedule and manage course delivery timetables at client locations. Recommend and implement course content updates based on related legislation and/or MTCU curriculum.
  • Participate on government and industry Provincial Advisory Committees for the Powerline Technician Trade.
  • Adhere to MTCU Training Standards for Powerline Apprenticeship Training and 0-8 Ton Mobile Crane Operator Training courses.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Power Line Technician certification with a minimum of ten (10) years’ related experience. Able to obtain Interprovincial “Red Seal Designation”.  
  • Currently certified in the Utility Work Protection Code. Previous front line supervisory experience a definite asset.
  • Qualified as a 0-8 Ton mobile crane operator and/or Branch 2 Certified Hoisting Engineer – 339C.
  • Knowledge of program development, delivery and education principles.
  • First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) certifications.
  • Advanced knowledge of health and safety management systems, programs, services and current federal and provincial legislation.
  • Proficient with computers; MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint), Internet and intranet software and applicable software along with other relevant technology equipment (audio/visual/smart board equipment, fall protection training equipment and other pertinent industry specific tools).
  • Excellent communication skills to deal effectively with staff, external members, suppliers and government contacts. 
  • Creative, energetic, self-motivated and results-oriented.  Proven team player who is both flexible and adaptable.
  • Valid Ontario (DZ) driver’s license, ability to travel extensively by ground and/or air transportation within Ontario, nationally and internationally, and work flexible hours.
