Position Purpose:

The Technical Trades Supervisor oversees, coordinates and directs the development of the Trades Apprentices within the Apprenticeship Programs in Lines, Metering, Substations, and System Control.  This position partners with each functional area and Human Resources to ensure that Apprentices are equipped with the training, experience, and knowledge to develop into competent and experienced Journeypersons. This position also supports the functional areas in the development and delivery of programs and workshops to prepare Journeypersons and Lead Hands for successful transitions to higher levels of responsibility.  This position also delivers training courses and supervises crews consisting of Apprentices. 

Responsibilities:

  • Conducts training needs analysis and implement short and long- term training objectives for the Apprentices
  • Coordinates training plans with internal and external resources to ensure timely and appropriate training is delivered
  • Delivers training courses, programs and orientations
  • Observes Apprentices in the classroom and field, ensuring they are receiving the learning and support they require to be successful
  • Supervises crews consisting of Apprentices in the field to instruct work methods, procedures and practices
  • Ensures that the apprentice is instructed and evaluated to the MTCU provincial standard
  • Ensures consistency in application of the Apprentice Program and industry guidelines and standards
  • Works in partnership with the functional area and Human Resources to resolve any gaps in application
  • Oversees and coordinates all on-the-job and experiential training for the Apprentices in the Apprenticeship Program
  • Works closely with key stakeholders to identify suitable projects for the Apprentices to solely organize and execute
  • Identifies and evaluates new training tools/methods and determine application and compatibility with the organization
  • Conducts regularly scheduled visits with Apprentices and Mentors to identify learning opportunities
  • Acts as the direct point of contact for the Apprentices for any concerns they may have regarding the Apprenticeship Program
  • Assesses performance and analyze feedback to determine appropriate actions and to ensure client satisfaction
  • Conducts periodic performance reviews with Apprentices
  • Develops and maintains an interdepartmental task exposure schedule for each Apprentice
  • Works with industry educational institutions and Mentors to design and deliver educational lessons to internal and external organizations
  • Provides coaching and feedback to internal coaches/mentors
  • Assumes a key role in the apprentice recruitment, selection and onboarding process and participates in on-site meetings with functional Managers to provide feedback to the Trades Schools and observe potential new hires
  • Develops and maintains the Apprentice Program Guide
  • Work closely with Technical Trades Supervisors across Alectra Regions to ensure consistency in program content, objectives, and delivery
  • Organizes and chairs Apprentice Council meetings
  • Develops and schedules Skills Boot Camps for each Apprentice prior to attending each level of school
  • Assesses and makes recommendations for upgrades to all departmental training facilities
  • Registers the Apprentice through the local MTCU office and register the Apprentice in school
  • Ensures Apprentice logs are maintained, and that Journeyperson documentation is obtained upon completion of the apprenticeship
  • Provides progress reports in relation to Apprentice training and development as required by the functional areas
  • Co-ordinates meetings, schedules and supporting documentation
  • Identifies opportunities to streamline or automate processes to continuously improve service delivery
  • Identifies opportunities for Apprentices to participate in external skills competitions and co-ordinates participation
  • Ensures compliance to legislative, regulatory, and Alectra policies, procedures and standards
  • Ability to go on Supervisor on-call roster an asset
  • Performs other duties as assigned 

Education:

  • Post-secondary education in related field
  • Holds a recognized trade or equivalent
  • Train- the - trainer certification an asset
  • Must hold and maintain a valid class “G” driver’s license 

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of previous training experience within a Trades environment
  • Experience in Adult Learning techniques when designing and delivering training and support materials is an asset
  • Experience in a unionized utility environment an asset 

Specialized Knowledge:

  • Extensive knowledge of OHSA, EUSR, health and safety regulations
  • In-depth knowledge of Alectra policies, procedures, and standards
  • Proficiency with computing tools, including MS Office applications and GIS
