ABOUT THIS ROLE

Burlington Hydro Inc. is currently seeking a Specialist, Business Systems Applications/Programmer to join our IT team. Reporting to the VP, Information Technology Services & CIO, you are customer service oriented and possess good communication skills to foster cooperation and collaboration with internal IT staff, end users and external vendors. You understand the need for accountability to IT Management and the end user for on-time, on-budget project completion and quality of work. 

As a Specialist, Business Systems Applications/Programmer, you will work closely with IT management and external vendors when defining changes to existing applications or when collecting and documenting requirements for new applications. In this role, you will provide technical support for various projects, coordinating application software upgrades, maintaining project implementation schedules and completing appropriate systems documentation. You will provide application support to IT’s computer operations and end user departments including daily engagement in IT’s support of Corporate Operational and Business Intelligence Reporting involving both the creation of report content as well as training and support for end users. This position must be versatile to work on any BHI corporate application, including ERP, CIS, Document Management Software and so on. 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with requirements definition, creation, and maintenance of content for business operational reporting including business intelligence, dashboards, KPI reporting and ‘Big Data’ analysis and provide effective training and assistance to end user report authors
  • Conduct hands-on approach in the detailed analysis of new and existing business processes, for in-house and 3rd party vendor applications, including preparation of work specifications/design, code changes, testing, debugging, documentation, implementation, and end-user training
  • Define, develop, maintain, and expedite detailed project implementation schedules for IT support and upgrade activities, with responsibility for completing assigned itemized tasks
  • Participate in cross-departmental ‘Integration Team’ discussions for strategic integrated solutions between various software applications as well as with external system environments
  • Provide application and training support for end users
  • Conduct some coding of new inquiries/screens/processes for 3rd party applications according to work specifications
  • Assist vendors with understanding and developing new software features based on end user requirements
  • Comply with all IT documentation standards relating to application support and training activities
  • Assist Users with Unit and QA Testing including the construction of test scenarios, staging of test data sets, participating in the testing process and final analysis of test results
  • Recommend, schedule, and perform software improvements and upgrades 

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • An undergraduate degree in Computer Science or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • 3-5 years of business application experience including financial accounting (GL, AR, AP), inventory & warehouse control, purchase order management, work order management, customer service & billing, meter data management
  • Hands-on programming/technical experience for peripheral screen inquiries/processes/coding for 3rd party applications including Bill Print Tailoring (XML/XSL)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Data Structures
  • Solid understanding of, and demonstrated working knowledge in the construction of quality, performance-based SQL
  • Exposure to Java, XML/XSL and Microsoft SSIS
  • Experience with Report Writers (IBM COGNOS Business Intelligence and Webquery Reporting would be an asset)
  • Flexible and adaptable in regards to learning and understanding new technologies
