INTERNAL AUDITOR

(Temporary for up to 18 – 24 months)

The Internal Auditor position provides an exciting developmental opportunity for a motivated and organized problem-solver with a positive attitude, and a passion for learning and cultivating relationships. The Internal Auditor has a combination of sound auditing and financial knowledge, willingness to learn, problem solving capabilities and the ability to develop/maintain relationships across multiple operating companies including Canadian Niagara Power, Cornwall Electric, Algoma Power and Wataynikaneyap Power PM. 

Key functions of this role:

  • Provide independent, objective assurance and consulting services in planning, execution and reporting of internal/external audit projects.
  • Assist the Board of Directors and FortisOntario executives in accomplishing business objectives with an acceptable risk framework by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to improve effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance.
  • Opportunity to lead presentations to the Board of Directors and FortisOntario Executive
  • Lead the independent evaluation of design and operating effectiveness of Internal Controls over Financial Reporting (“ICFR”) to support management evaluation of ICFR.
  • Ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (“SOX”) Section 302/304 in accordance with guidance and planning from Fortis Inc.
  • Enhance the current audit program, perform audit testing, prepare working papers, and communicate issues to management, with additional formal reporting to the Board of Directors at audit completion.
  • Ensure compliance with Company policies, procedures, contracts, laws, regulations, ethics, and help safeguard the Company’s assets.
  • Exposure to the Ontario regulatory environment and the unprecedented Wataynikaneyap Power Project 

What makes you a successful candidate?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance or Business Administration
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) designation in good standing.
  • 3 to 5 years of progressive auditing experience with a strong knowledge of accounting practices and procedures, internal controls systems and advanced accounting systems.
  • Understanding of Canadian Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises.
  • Highly organized with a keen attention to detail, able to commit to an increased work volume on a periodic basis, and adaptable to changing work priorities.
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent data analysis skills with the ability to identify opportunities for improvements and develop/implement appropriate solutions.
  • Travel to other FortisOntario subsidiaries will be required on a periodic basis.
  • Understanding of SOX compliance and US GAAP is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Energy Board’s Distribution System Code and Transmission System Code is an asset.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid Ontario “G” license with a clean driving abstract - travel within Ontario will be required. 

This opportunity is located at our corporate office in beautiful Fort Erie, and reports to the Vice President Finance/Chief Financial Officer of FortisOntario. Remote working on a full or part-time basis would be considered.
