2 SUBSTATION TECHNICIANS

(CONTRACT)

 

Reporting to the Manager, Planning & Maintenance in the Asset Services – Engineering department, this position will:

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and design of proposed installations and upgrades to completion and as-built drawings and design work using AutoCAD.
  • Install new Protection and Control equipment (P&C) remote terminal unit and wiring to Substations.
  • Upgrade P&C relays and wiring within the breaker cubicles. Replace existing RTU and communication equipment. Modify existing wiring to adapt to new Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA).
  • Install or upgrade control and communication systems on pole or pad mounted distribution switches. Install and maintain AC and DC substation service systems.
  • Program, set up and test installed equipment at completion of projects. Purchase required hardware and wiring as required.
  • Test and inspect Substation Transformers, Breakers, Relays, Switchgear, Metering equipment and grounding. Using test equipment associated with each component being tested such as, Transformer Capacitance and Dissipation Bridge, Micro Ohmmeter, Relay Tester, etc.
  • Maintaining and repair AC and DC service systems for the Substations as required. Repair or replace defective items or equipment. Purchase items as needed, gather oil samples as required.
  • Investigate and diagnose faults, failures, breakdowns and improper operations of the following:

-        Substation transformers

-        Relays

-        Breakers

-        Pole mounted distribution switches and reclosers

-        Padmounted switchgear

-        RTU and communication equipment 

  • Collect scheduled and periodic Substation data and maintain detailed Substation loading and equipment information records.
  • Ensure substation components and structures, including yard and enclosure are in a secure, safe and clean condition. Direct on-site Contractor work.
  • Install programs specific to equipment used, such as ABB, Cooper, GE, etc. Research for data and specifications for various pieces of equipment for upcoming jobs. Source parts and request quotations and purchase requisitions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3 to 5 years relevant experience
  • 2 years community college Diploma in Electrical Engineering
  • Journeyperson Substation Electrician Certificate or equivalent.
  • Able to pass Electrical Theory Qualification Test.
  • Experienced with electrical distribution systems, knowledge of protection and control systems.
  • Experience with various SCADA systems used in electric utilities.
