Hydro Ottawa is seeking individuals who are interested in participating in a recognized Apprenticeship Program where you will become a certified Meter Technician.  As an employee who is participating in a certified apprenticeship program with the Company, you must agree to take courses as mandated by the province to meet the MEARIE requirements.  

As a trainee you will participate in a five-year apprenticeship program that includes on-the-job training and training through a competency based trade school. 


The selection process uses standard mechanical aptitude tests, driver competency assessment and panel interviews to screen qualified applicants. To participate in the apprenticeship-screening program the applicants must provide a copy of a relevant college diploma and a driver’s license abstract. 

As a Meter Technician you will be responsible to install, remove and maintain meters and metering equipment for verification in customer residential and commercial premises, Hydro Ottawa sub-stations, and buildings according to Hydro Ottawa’s Conditions of Service and Measurement Canada standards. Meter Technicians work on new and existing construction across the full range of Hydro Ottawa’s service offerings. Meter Technicians have the capacity to calibrate all types of meters used by Hydro Ottawa and those of our Utility customers according to Measurement Canada standards. This position is responsible for providing excellent customer service and to be a field ambassador for Hydro Ottawa.  Salary range is $23.05 to $35.47 per hour, 40 hours per week. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

Education/Experience:

  • Graduate of Community College Electrical Engineering Technician program or equivalent
  • Valid Ontario Class G drivers license
  • Familiarity with Quality Assurance principles including ISO 9001-2008

  • Able and willing to learn to adapt to new technologies
  • Be flexible when situations change with the ability to work in an ever changing and dynamic work environment across the company service territory
  • Computer software skills using MS Office suite of products and related metering software
  • Communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and written
  • Be organized, attention to detail, maintain accurate records
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, and in a team environment
  • Good interpersonal skills demonstrating integrity, initiative, creativity and enthusiasm in achieving results directly and with other staff members
  • Above average mechanical aptitude
  • Forklift operator competencies with ability to obtain certification
  • CPR, First Aid and WHIMIS training with ability to obtain certification
  • Demonstrated defensive driving skills and care and control of company vehicles
  • English essential, bilingualism will be considered an asset 

Conditions of Employment:

  • Successful completion of the trades apprenticeship training program
  • Subject to a medical examination, reference/background verification, satisfactory “secret” (security level II) clearance, and a driver competency assessment
