ENGINEERING SERVICES TECHNICIAN

POSITION SUMMARY: 

This position is responsible for providing the customer with the necessary information regarding Burlington Hydro policies, procedures, design standards and charges for servicing new and existing industrial, commercial and residential facilities for both overhead pole lines and underground electrical distribution.  Perform field visits for maintenance inquiries and prepare instruction orders to rectify problem.  

KEY DUTIES: 

  • Design Hydro Plant layout for servicing new and the upgrading of industrial, commercial and residential facilities
  • Prepare labour and material estimates for projects, requisition and commit associated construction materials
  • Prepare drawings, sketches, and select pole framing standards to be included in design packages
  • Prepare overhead and underground servicing designs, whether new or an upgrade of an existing service
  • Answer inquiries by contractors, electricians and service customers regarding service requirements and, if necessary, meet with them on site
  • Assist surveyor in the layout of Hydro plant
  • Perform guying calculations, voltage drop calculations and pulling tension calculations
  • Review and coordinate subdivision and townhouse projects
  • Answer inquiries from customers regarding voltage and tree problems and take appropriate action to rectify
  • Act as a liaison between customer and construction crews/contractors
  • Prepare instruction orders and assemble design packages for construction crews; follow up on completed instruction orders
  • Follow up on instruction orders by tracing their whereabouts in the system upon request of supervisor or customer
  • Upgrade transformers that are subjected to excessive over loads and arrange/notify customers of power interruptions
  • Calculate transformer, feeder and fuse loading when called upon by supervisor or as part of project design
  • Monitor the transformers in stock to ensure surplus transformers are not requisitioned
  • While in the field, always be aware of any facilities that require repair, i.e., rotten poles, defective equipment
  • All other duties as assigned

SKILLS / QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Post-secondary degree/diploma in Electrical Technology or Technician and is a C.E.T. (preferably at the Technologist level)
  • Knowledge and demonstrated applied application of GIS/Information Technology would be considered an asset
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in electrical and civil construction design, standards and practices
  • Knowledge of electrical power distribution system (overhead and underground)
  • Basic knowledge of electricity, AC circuits, mathematics and electrical equipment
  • Basic knowledge of civil engineering and surveying
  • Ability to read and interpret construction and electrical drawings
  • Drafting skills and proficient in use of design software, i.e. AutoCAD, Microstation
  • Experience in the operation of personal computers including a working knowledge of MS Word and MS Excel
  • Able to demonstrate a commitment to safety, teamwork, customer relations and respect in the workplace
  • Construction field experience
  • Valid Class G driver’s license in good standing
  • Familiar with C.S.A. overhead and underground standards pertaining to distribution system and equipment
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering would be an asset
