We are looking for an ambitious and highly motivated Power Technician Apprentice to join our team at our head office in Newmarket while also responsible for activities in Midland and Tay.

POSITION SUMMARY

Our Powerline Technician Apprentice will work with the line crew in the construction and maintenance of the overhead and underground lines in the NT Power utilities distribution system and under the direct supervision of a Powerline Technician Journeyperson, within the context of the training requirements of the Province of Powerline Technician Apprenticeship Program. The successful candidate will be required to enroll in and work towards the completion of MEARIE Line School.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Power Distribution Construction and Maintenance
  • Learns how to construct and maintain overhead and underground distribution lines by:
    • terminating high and low voltage cables
    • connecting new services and installing new meters
    • repairing underground faults
    • trimming trees and clearing lines where necessary
  • Assists in the installation of poles and associated hardware for the construction of powerlines
  • Assists in the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment such as padmount transformers, switch gear, etc.
  • Maintain vehicles and equipment in good working order
  • Reports unsafe practices to supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Enrolled in a post-secondary Powerline Technician program
  • Must have completed minimum of Level 1 Apprenticeship with IHSA or The MEARIE Group
  • Valid Ontario Class DZ Driver’s License required. Class A vehicle license with Z endorsement is an asset.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures related to the safe work practices, including, but not limited to the following:
    • Infrastructure Health and Safety Association (IHSA) Electrical Rule Book
    • Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations (OHSA)
    • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
    • MTO Traffic Manual – Book 7
    • NT Power Emergency Guide and Safety Policies and Procedures
  • Good interpersonal skills with team members, especially with customers
  • Must reside within 40 km distance as measured in a straight line of the corporate limits of the employee’s normal service territory.
  • Works with high voltage equipment
  • Climbs to and works at high heights
  • Works in all types of inclement weather, including extreme weather conditions, and in plant environments. Physical strength and agility to carry out key responsibilities, as assessed by a physician licensed to practice medicine in Ontario.
