* Note that during the employee’s apprenticeship, they will be assigned to work in any Elexicon service territory for various durations of time in order to gain exposure and experience relative to Elexicon's distribution network

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the District Supervisor of the Line Operations Department, the Apprentice Lineperson (Power Line Technician) will be involved in the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground distribution systems.

Duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Be very familiar with all safe work practices as set out by IHSA and company standards and work in conformity thereto
  • Be familiar and participate as exposure guidelines allow in energized work practices and techniques that may include bare hand, live line tool, and rubber glove work methods.
  • Using approved work methods and line techniques, the Lineperson (Power Line Technician) apprentice will construct and maintain lines and equipment energized up to 44,000 volts on various overhead and underground plant applications leading to competency in trade skills.
  • Set foundations for pad mounted equipment and install cable, transformers and switching devices
  • Be able to safely and proficiently operate bucket trucks, radial boom derricks, tensioning machines for stringing operations, underground fault locating equipment, cable tracing equipment, hydraulic equipment and all other tools used in line maintenance and construction. Must be able to operate boats, ATV’s, snowmobiles, and off-road equipment in the work environment if trained to do so.
  • Be familiar with measurement devices and carry out test procedures as required, testing for potential, measuring current on ammeters, measuring withstand voltages and locating cable faults
  • Be able to climb wood poles and structures to be able to access to distribution systems and equipment for the purposes of construction, maintenance, replacement, and switching.
  • Understand and be familiar with isolation, and grounding and bonding techniques.
  • Willing to be trained to operate equipment specific to District and technique
  • Must understand and comply with Ontario Traffic Manual - Book 7 – Temporary Conditions, Electrical Utility Safety Rules, OHSA, Reg. 22/04, and other policies and procedures
  • Respond to trouble calls and public emergencies regarding power outages, unsafe situations, service reconnections, or enlisting assistance from co-workers and dispatch as required within and outside of normal operating hours
  • Travel to other areas within Elexicon’s jurisdiction to help with emergency restoration including overnight trips
  • Other duties as required may be considered part of these responsibilities

KEY SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Overhead/underground maintenance and construction, organization, communication and troubleshooting skills within an electrical distribution system at an apprentice level
  • Good knowledge of safety rules and safe work practices
  • Ability to work safely at heights, within confined spaces, and unfavorable weather conditions

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Candidates must be registered with the College of Trades as a Power Line Technician Apprentice; or Power Line Technician Co-op Student who has successfully completed their diploma at a recognized Post-Secondary institution
  • Ability to complete physical and written work tests relevant to the trade
  • Must possess knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and the EUS Rule Book
  • Class DZ driver’s license in good standing (with ability to obtain AZ license)
  • Knowledge of WHMIS, Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7 – Temporary Conditions, OHSA, Reg. 22/04
  • Working at Heights Certification
  • Chainsaw training (preferred)
  • Propane Certification (preferred)
  • The applicant must be First Aid, CPR and AED certified

PHYSICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

  • Up to 70% of position involves physical effort
  • Travel required
  • Work environment involves exposure to hazardous situations
