High Voltage Substation Technician/Technologist

KPC Power Electrical Ltd. “KPC Power” is a progressive, privately-owned, high-voltage electrical contractor located in Ajax, Ontario.

We specialize in high-voltage substation maintenance, construction, retrofits and wholesale energy-metering services. KPC Power houses all specialties internally to professionally implement all work, ensuring complete customer satisfaction.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

KPC Power needs an experienced HIGH VOLTAGE SUBSTATION TECHNICIAN/TECHNOLOGIST for our growing business. In this position, you’ll report to the Project Manager and is responsible for providing technical field services and
mentoring Junior Technicians and Technologist-in-training.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • High-voltage/power system maintenance, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, technical support and documentation activities to ensure compliance with specifications, codes and customer requirements
  • Inspect completed installations and observe functional operations, to ensure conformance to design and equipment specifications and compliance with operational and safety standards
  • Plan, research and implement methodology and procedures to apply principles
    of electrical / electronic engineering theory & technology to maintenance,
    construction, commissioning and troubleshooting projects especially related to Protection and Control
  • Prepare, review, study and edit technical diagrams drawings and specifications of electrical components and systems to ensure that application, installation and operations conform to required standards and customer requirements
  • Assist with information collection and analysis for Arc-Flash and Coordination Studies.
  • Performing a wide range of engineering technology tasks by operating computer-assisted test, analysis & design engineering software and equipment.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies
  • Assess process, design, implementation and work flow variables in order to inform Project Managers and clients with respect to scheduling & cost controls
  • Prepare project reports by collecting, summarizing, analyzing and interpreting information; drawing correct conclusions and making appropriate recommendations
  • Communicate with customers, engineers and others to discuss the relevant
    relative merits of existing or potential engineering products or projects, problems and potential solutions
  • Provide engineering information by answering technical questions and requests

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

  • 5 - 10 years contractor/utility field experience
  • Must have good communication skills, both orally and written
  • Proficient in use of electrical engineering design and analysis software
  • Knowledge of applicable IEEE & NETA Standards related to substation equipment tests
  • Able to locate, organize, document and analyze information using appropriate technology and information systems
  • Solve problems using a collaborative, holistic, systematic approach
  • Familiar with programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Multisim, AutoCAD, Proteus, ETAP, among others
  • Work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team, with & without supervision
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, clients, and other contractors
  • Physically fit, able to lift various types and weights of equipment
  • Ability to travel to job sites
  • Safety conscious and willing to learn and adapt to changing technologies in the industry
  • A clean driving record, minimum G class license required. D class license would be
    an asset

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary education in Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technician/Technology program or equivalent
  • OACETT certification preferred
