Distribution Engineer in Training (EIT)

Oshawa Power maintains 1000 km of overhead and underground distribution lines within a 150 km2 service territory, operated at 44 and 13.8 kV, supplied by 9 distribution and 3 transmission substations. Position Summary:

Reporting to the Senior Distribution Engineer, the Distribution Engineer in Training (EIT) is responsible for providing technical support to the engineering department for various utility initiatives, capital projects, contract and tender reviews and the maintenance and operation of distribution assets. 

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Ensures the design, documentation, and completion of engineering design, as well as documentation and completion of engineering projects.
  • Prepares equipment approval sheets for electrical distribution equipment in compliance with O. Reg 22/04.
  • Reviews design standards and any deviations from USF standards, ensuring compliance with relevant CSA standards as per O. Reg 22/04.
  • Reviews joint use and third-party attachments to ensure compliance with O. Reg 22/04.
  • Conducts and assists with engineering studies including voltage and outage analysis, Connection Impact Assessments, Protection Coordination Studies.
  • Models proposed new loads or generation and performs load flow and short circuit analysis to ensure optimal configuration of Oshawa Power’s distribution system.
  • Supports outage management, maintenance of outage details, and conducts root cause analysis for system planning.
  • Ensures that generation facilities and protection designs are consistent with Oshawa Power standards and requirements.
  • Prepares connection cost estimates and offers to connect for new commercial and generation requests to Oshawa Power’s system.
  • Tracks project and key performance indicators for project management and corporate reporting.
  • Works with technical team to prepare studies, preliminary drawings, technical specifications, detail designs, calculations and associated construction drawings.
  • Updates current engineering software applications with new products and upgrades.
  • Performs site and factory inspections for compliance or data gathering and provides support for the preparation of subsequent reports.
  • Conducts technical research, assists with proposal writing, and updates and maintains documents, records, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Participates in utility industry committees such as Utilities Standards Forum (USF) and other working groups for standards, relevant design requirements, and best practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Key Skills/Attributes:

  • Post-secondary degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems or related field.
  • Registration with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) as an EIT and working towards Professional Engineering license.
  • Demonstrated work experience in engineering, planning, project management, or related field. Work experience, cooperative education placement, or student work in an electric utility is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of engineering software systems used for distribution design, modelling, analysis, reporting, and management.
  • Knowledge of applicable Distribution Engineering Standards (USF, CSA, ESA, IEEE), Utility Work Protection Code, Electrical Utility Safety Rules, and Ontario Regulation 22/04.
  • Facilitation, project management and analytical skills with the ability to establish good working relationships and communicate/work with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to make independent decisions on work methods and procedures.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and utilize problem solving techniques to find practical solutions.
  • Highly motivated and able to work independently; asks for help when required.
  • Ability to write clear and concise technical reports, deliver effective presentations, and answer questions with definitive professional authority.
  • Class “G” Driver license.
