Project Engineer – Grid Modernization & Planning

 

ABOUT THIS ROLE

Burlington Hydro Inc. is currently seeking a Project Engineer – Grid Modernization & Planning to join the Engineering team. This position reports to the Manager of System Planning & Grid Modernization and is responsible for project engineering distribution system modeling and simulations, systems analysis for optimization and reliability, and protection and coordination studies of electric utility distribution systems. Expertise in utility electric distribution planning, protection and control design, and operational technologies is required.  This is an on-site position.                                                           

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform a wide variety of power system modeling, analysis, and project-oriented engineering activities which may include distribution automation, non-wire alternatives, battery energy storage systems, renewable energy, microgrids, and other distribution energy resources (DER) and emerging technologies that are currently impacting the distribution system
  • Perform power systems analysis of short circuit current, load flow, feeder load balancing, losses and reliability, protective devise coordination, voltage impact, grounding and arc flash, network configuration optimization and feeder loading
  • Analyze power system events, prepare and present detailed technical reports and clearly and effectively communicate the results and action plans both verbally and in writing
  • Perform power system planning modeling and analysis in the long-term, near-term, and operational planning horizons that will ensure the most economic distribution system using CYME distribution planning program
  • Assess the reliability, stability, and efficiency of existing and planned power systems; develop solutions where necessary to address concerns and maintain compliance with applicable standards and criteria
  • Assist with preparation load forecasts for Regional Planning, IESO and Hydro One
  • Provides technical review of potential system impacts from proposed substantial load additions and provides timely response that includes study results and recommendations.
  • Develop protective schemes and issue settings for programmable devices
  • Coordinate the design, review and testing of all protection, control, and operational communication equipment/networks, and approve schematic and wiring diagrams according to utility standards, IEEE, and CSA
  • Develop and write technical specifications for implementing grid modernization projects, and complete and review appropriate technical documentation related to product specifications, market research, documented analysis, test instruction manuals, etc.
  • Provide technical support to internal and external customers as a subject matter expert for the distribution system planning, and protection and coordination
  • Participate in a continuous learning manner with respect to new and emerging electric distribution system technologies with positive operation impacts, including all technologies associated with smart grid
  • Perform routine engineering and design tasks, and participate in field reviews of distribution asset
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently, including identification of critical path items to ensure deliverable deadlines are met and prepare instruction orders for hydro crews
  • Work collaboratively with Engineering, Stations, Lines, and Control Room Departments
  • All other duties as assigned

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Electrical Engineering Degree or equivalent education and experience, P.Eng. designation would be an asset
  • 3-5 years Electrical Engineering experience, distribution system experience would be an asset 

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL

  • Knowledge of utility electric distribution system planning, protection and control design, construction, operations and maintenance of distribution substations
  • Comprehensive knowledge of electricity, AC circuits, mathematics and electrical equipment
  • Knowledge of developing and modifying automation scripts in VB/ Microsoft Excel macro, C++, SQL, Python, or similar
  • Thorough knowledge of CYME, CYMTCC, CYME Gateway, GIS and Computer Assisted Design (CAD) systems such as computer design/drafting; preferably AutoCAD and Hexagon
  • Thorough knowledge of distribution system overcurrent protection and coordination
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Proficient in other Microsoft Office Applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access etc.)
  • Experience in dealing with the public
  • Ability to read and interpret construction and electrical drawings
  • Knowledge of organizational practices as applied to the analysis/application of programs, policies, collective agreements and operational needs
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, industry codes/standards and regulations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Able and willing to learn, adapt to new technologies, flexible when situations change, able to work in an ambiguous environment
  • Effective communicator who treats others in a professional manner that promotes a safe and respectful workplace
  • Attention to detail and excellent analytical and time management skills; energetic and motivated
  • Willing to work flexible hours
