The Opportunity 

Reporting to the Operations Manager, and working alongside Powerline Technicians, you will have the opportunity to assist with installation, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground electric distribution lines, transformers and related equipment. 

This role is perfect for someone who is eager to learn, values health and safety, and is ready for physical work. 

Accountabilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Observe and assist with the construction of overhead lines, setting and framing of poles, stringing and energizing conductors in accordance with InnPower standards.
  • Observe and assist with the construction of underground circuits, installation of primary and secondary equipment, ducts, conductors, cables, terminations, splicing and the energization of conductors in accordance with InnPower standards.
  • Observes and assists with electric utility connections, disconnections, concerning customer service activity as requested/required.
  • Observe and assist with building, repairing, and maintaining 120/240V and 600/347V secondary systems including streetlight and sentinel light assets.
  • Learn to operate proficiently all underground equipment for locating, fault finding, and hi-pot testing.
  • Learn to troubleshoot and analyze with the use of operating maps, service maps and experienced observation, line faults and power quality problems.
  • Trim trees around energized electrical power lines utilizing chain saws and other equipment.
  • Dig and excavate pole holes and splice pits.
  • Perform substation inspection, maintenance, and construction.
  • Assist with maintenance of reclosures, voltage regulators and capacitors.
  • Observe and assist with installation and replacement of domestic meters.
  • Conduct equipment and vehicle maintenance.

With health and safety being one of our core values, it is important to ensure you perform the duties of the position in a safe manner, in compliance with all relevant legislation, standards and policies including (but not limited to) the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the E&USA Rule Book, Utility Work Protection Code (UWPC), The Highway Traffic Act, The Professional Engineers Act, all InnPower policies and procedures. 

You will also be required to ensure that all necessary personal protective equipment (e.g. safety boots, hard hat, eye protection, protective clothing, rubber gloves, etc.) is used and maintained in an acceptable condition. 

Core Capabilities: 

  • Good hearing, eyesight, and hand/eye coordination.
  • Ability to learn to safely operate line trade-related vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to learn to safely climb poles (up to 90’) with belt and spurs and fall arrest.
  • Ability to safely work at heights, confined spaces and other various job duties regardless of outdoor weather conditions or distractions.
  • Ability to work safely and effectively with hand tools and safely carry heavy equipment.
  • Good communication (written and verbal), organizational, record-keeping, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to learn to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, maps, drawings and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to communicate with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public to maintain safe, effective and mutually respectful professional relationships.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties.
  • Ability to learn to analyze unusual occurrences with systems and repair them. 

Qualifications: 

  • Grade 12 high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Currently enrolled in a College Powerline Technician Program.
  • A valid Ontario Class ‘DZ’, ‘AZ’ or ‘ARZ’ Driver’s License.
  • Knowledge of Electrical Utility Safety Rules and OH&S Act & Regulations.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in electrical distribution construction, inspection, operation, testing and maintenance.
  • Standard First Aid/CPR, WHMIS and Traffic Control/Book 7 training is considered an asset.
  • Self-motivated while independently working safely with good housekeeping practices.
