The Opportunity 

In this position, you will be responsible for providing technical support for the Distribution Engineering Supervisor. This includes providing technical specifications, drawings review, work order estimates and installation inspection for new developments. 

This role is perfect for someone who is detail-oriented, values health and safety, and is eager to learn. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Provide technical specifications to developers, review and correct their plans, and inspect installation to make sure it conforms to approved drawings.
  • Provide information for billing purpose for new developments, and damaged facilities.
  • Prepare detailed line layouts, work orders and estimates for line work required for new developments, capital projects or line relocations; do initial work for easements when required.
  • Stake out line betterments or relocations; notify adjacent landowners regarding work.
  • Update distribution system CAD drawings.
  • Provide specifications for ordering transformers for developments.
  • Make recommendations to Manager, Distribution Engineering on various aspects of the distribution system to improve reliability and efficiency.
  • Work with Manager, Distribution Engineering on transformer load management, phase balancing, voltage and current studies; download information to computer.
  • Liaise with other utilities such as gas, telephone, cable TV, water, sewer, etc., to ensure co-ordination of services.
  • Assist in the organization of the forestry program.
  • Arrange for notification of customers regarding forestry program and discuss with customers their concerns.
  • Conduct fault current and fuse co-ordination studies.
  • Assist during outages.
  • Prepare tender and contract documentation.
  • Prepare and maintain joint use permits and records.

You must also ensure that you operate motor vehicles in a safe and responsible manner. 

Core Capabilities: 

  • Ability to deal with customers tactfully.
  • AutoCAD computer drafting skills.
  • Must be able to prepare estimates, specifications, drawings, standards, and instructions, and be able to interpret same.
  • Operation of voltage and current meter.
  • Operate locate equipment.
  • Operate GPS data collector unit – Topcon.
  • Operate a class ‘G’ motor vehicle. 

Qualifications: 

  • Working towards a college diploma in electrical engineering.
  • A valid Ontario Class 'G' Drivers License with an excellent driving record.
  • An excellent understanding of electrical distribution systems including their design, construction, and maintenance.
  • Experience and knowledge of underground cable locating equipment.
  • Good knowledge of computer software programs, including AutoCad, SpidaCalc, Quadra, Microsoft Windows, and Office applications.
  • Knowledge of IHSA Rules for Safe Work Practices, OHSA and UWPC (as defined above).
