Engineering Technician

An exciting and challenging opportunity is available for a self-motivated, results-oriented dynamic individual to be part of a customer-focused energy distribution corporation serving over 24,500 customers in fifteen communities within Grey, Bruce, Huron and Wellington Counties. The key responsibilities include:

  • Prepare estimates, work order requests, drawings, and layouts for work to be undertaken in compliance with company and industry standards.
  • Assist in the planning and arrangement for extensions and betterments to the distribution system.
  • Complete GIS mapping system updates and modifications.
  • Coordinate and cooperate with Line Supervisors to achieve the safe, efficient, timely and cost-effective supply of reliable electrical energy to customers.
  • Coordinate with customers, engineers, developers, road, and railway authorities as necessary.
  • Assist customers in meeting their need for electrical distribution facilities through liaison and coordination with developers, consultants, contractors, and other customers, ensuring that customers are apprised of servicing policy and administrative requirements.
  • Coordinate work order openings, track status and compliance with developers, customers, and contractors.
  • Prepare responses to inquiries regarding new development submitted by government authorities providing information on servicing requirements, and the appropriate Company policy pertaining to site plan, subdivision plan and zoning applications.
  • Design and Coordinate the Installation and Maintenance of polyphase revenue meter installations and custom metering requirements including pulse recording meters, and prepayment meters.
  • Administer the revenue meter maintenance program, ensuring that all revenue metering testing, sealing and inspection is in compliance with applicable legislation and standards.
  • Set up and conduct tests of complete units and components under operational conditions to investigate design proposals for improving equipment performance or other factors, or to obtain data for development, standardization, and quality control.
  • Review project instructions and blueprints to verify test specifications, procedures, objectives, test equipment, nature of technical problem, and possible solutions.
  • Analyze indicated and calculated test results in relation to design or rated specifications and test objectives and modify or adjust equipment to meet specifications.
  • Record test procedures and results, numerical and graphical data, and recommendations for changes in product or test method. Knowledge of the Electrical Safety Authority Regulation 22/04, Utility Protection Code, WHMIS, CPR, First Aid, and all other applicable legislation.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of the Ontario Certified Electrical Engineering Technologist program with a minimum of 3 years related experience.
  • Knowledge of the Job Costing systems
  • Knowledge of the CAD/GIS system
  • Knowledge of the SpidaCalc system
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • General knowledge of Microsoft Windows
  • Ability to work from engineering prints (civil and electrical design drawings), sketches, technical manuals, specifications, and reports.
  • Good understanding of electrical fundamentals, distribution system configuration, distribution system equipment and facilities.
  • Must have excellent analytical skills and problem-solving ability along with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Adhere to the policies and legislation, which relate to the safe construction, operation, and maintenance of electrical distribution systems.
  • Driver’s license (class G).
  • Report unsafe conditions and recommend ways of improving the safety of the work environment.
