SUPERVISOR OF GENERATION OPERATIONS

Located in beautiful cottage country, Orillia Power Generation Corporation (OPGC) has a challenging and unique opportunity for a highly motivated and proactive individual to lead a talented team that operates and maintains our generation facilities. OPGC owns and operates six waterpower generating stations and seven solar generation facilities, with a total generating capacity of 22 MW. Reporting to the Director of Operations & Engineering, this position will supervise and manage a group of unionized tradespeople and operations staff to help achieve the company’s goals and objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Continuous commitment to safety, with adherence to all Occupational Health & Safety Act rules and regulations, the EUSA rule book and OPGC’s Health and Safety Systems.
  • Ensure regulatory obligations under applicable acts and legislation are met, including, but not limited to, the Occupational Health and Safety Act & Regulations, Ontario Electrical Safety Code, Environmental Protection Act, and effectively communicate with the applicable agencies such as MOL, MOECC, MNRF, PCA, IHSA, and ESA to ensure regulatory and operational compliance.
  • Provide strong leadership to the operations team to maximize electrical generation output, manage costs, and meet company workloads and schedules.
  • Develop, implement and maintain an effective preventive maintenance / condition monitoring
  • Assist in development and implementation of operating and capital budgets, including reviewing and scheduling of workforce resources and equipment.
  • Undertake procurement activities for contractors and materials, following company purchasing
  • Effectively manage contractors and subcontractors to ensure achievement of quality, safety, and environmental performance expectations.
  • Create a climate in which employees want to excel and contribute to team development and success by effectively coaching and directing staff members.
  • Promote individual job performance and accountability, as well as inspiring the team to work collectively to achieve company success.
  • Provide oversite to ensure effective management and operation of protection and control systems / SCADA.
  • Ensure that direct reports and areas of accountability meet all requirements regarding legislated regulations, company policies and practices, and collective agreement.
  • Plan, schedule and assign tasks to team members to ensure efficient completion of work.

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Successful completion of a post-secondary Electrical/Mechanical/Electromechanical Technician / Technology diploma or recognized
  • Certified Engineering Technician / Technologist with OACETT or equivalent.
  • 10 years’ experience in hydro-electric generation or heavy industrial plant, with minimum 5 years in a leadership role (preferably in a multi-trade environment).
  • Proficiency and experience in implementing operational, legal and regulatory requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act & Regulations including Utility Work Protection and sustaining a safe work culture. (WSIB Sector Specific JHSC Certification an asset).
  • Superior leadership, organization, planning, communication and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with control centre operations and SCADA systems.
  • A reputation for integrity, sound judgement, problem solving and effective change
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct labour relations in a unionized
  • Valid Class ‘G’ Driver’s license in the Province of Ontario.
