ABOUT THIS ROLE

Burlington Hydro Inc. (“BHI”) is currently seeking a Health & Safety Specialist.  Reporting to the Director, Health & Safety, this position is responsible for providing expertise in Health, Safety and Environment to aid the Company in adding value to its overall business objectives, provide innovative solutions, develop programs, and ensure compliance with all regulations through developing, monitoring, and educating on Company policies and the Health, Safety and Environment Management System (HSEMS). This position ensures that all activities fit into the organization’s strategy and overall business planning processes. This is an on-site position. 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Implements, manages, and monitors health, safety, and environmental programs, processes, and procedures with HSEMS.
  • Implements, manages and monitors health, safety, and environmental activities, including but not limited to health and safety committee meetings, Health & Safety Meetings, incident investigations, training activities, risk assessments, and safe work procedure reviews.
  • Take the lead in creating health, safety, and environmental documents, including but not limited to plans, processes, and procedures.
  • Conduct needs assessments with Company Leaders to determine training needs and develop the yearly training plan. Maintain the Training Matrix and Training Calendar in SafeTapp as part of the HSEMS.
  • Lead, and/or implement internal and external health and safety program evaluations (self-assessments, audits, evaluations).
  • Participate in limited field inspections and other types of reviews to assist in monitoring compliance with health, safety, and environmental requirements and provides findings about risks and suggestions for improvement.
  • Partner with internal key stakeholders on health, safety, and environmental matters and escalate inquiries where appropriate.
  • Establish and analyze Health Safety Environment performance measures. Assists in the identification and analysis of workplace incident trends.  Communicate observations and provide suggestions for incident reduction and improvement measures.
  • Create safety communications and deliver presentations, as necessary.
  • Assist with Facilities and Security programs and projects, as necessary.
  • All other duties as assigned. 

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Post-secondary degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Sciences, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum 5 to 10 years of related occupational safety, health, environmental, and/or security work experience.
  • Achievement of the professional safety designation CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) to produce and maintain spreadsheets, databases, charts, documents, and presentations.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL

  • Working knowledge of Health, Safety and Environment Management Systems (HSEMS).
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills and the ability to coordinate multiple assignments with varying deadlines (i.e., processes, activities, projects, emergency response procedures, etc.).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, presentation skills, and ability to influence stakeholders.
  • Comfort speaking in front of groups of various sizes.
  • Strong administrative skills, with the ability to maintain and report timely and accurate data.
  • Critical thinker with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Prior experience in safety, health, environment, construction, workers’ compensation and/or risk management is highly desirable.
  • Acts inclusively, treats others with respect, and aims to understand their perspective to promote a positive workplace culture.
  • Ability and confidence to interact with all levels of the organization, including senior leadership.
  • Takes the initiative to proactively identify and anticipate needs and make recommendations for implementation and execution.
