Apprentice System/Station Operator

The System/Station Operator is responsible for fulfilling the responsibilities of a 24/7 Controlling Authority by monitoring and authorizing the operation of transformer stations and the electrical distribution system in accordance with the IESO Market Rules and to respond to system anomalies, direct switching operations and prepare and administer Work Protection and maintain system logs and maps.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills
  • Intermediate MS Office skills and use of Corporate Software
  • Intermediate time management and planning skills with the ability to multitask and adopt to changing industry standards
  • Able to deal with fellow employees and customers in a tactful and courteous manner
  • Intermediate mathematical skills
  • Advanced problem solving, critical thinking and trouble shooting skills within differing situations
  • Intermediate AutoCAD skills
  • Ability to work a 12-hour shift schedule
  • Intermediate ability to interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, sketches and engineering drawings

Knowledge/Education:

  • Post Secondary Education in Electrical Engineering Technology or related discipline
  • Electrical System Operator Certificate an asset
  • Basic knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety requirements as it relates to individual, organizational and operational requirements
  • Familiar with EUSR Rules, and the Ontario Power System Restoration Plan
  • Familiar with Utility Work Protection Code
  • Familiar with distribution system equipment and operation

Experience:

  • 4 years’ related experience an asset
  • Valid Class “G” driver’s licence 

Major (Primary) Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and control the efficient operation of the electrical distribution system
  • Record all events and changes in the electrical distribution system; organize and interpret records and reports
  • Dispatch line crews for service calls and power outages within defined territory.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the timely restoration of power
  • Prepare work permits and switching orders to accommodate planned and unplanned outages
  • Coordinate with Hydro One, IESO and Enova Power crews to accommodate transformer substation maintenance and planned outages
  • Execute the Emergency Action Protocol as required and communicate with stakeholders as required
