POWERLINE TECHNICIAN APPRENTICE

ABOUT THIS ROLE

Burlington Hydro Inc. is currently seeking an Apprentice Powerline Technician. Reporting to the Powerline Supervisor, you will work with a crew responsible for the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground distribution systems at voltages of up to 27.6 kV. Responsibilities will be aligned to the trainee’s experience level, and duties may include maintaining tools and equipment, troubleshooting repairs and restoring system outages. The apprentice will work towards position objectives at ever-increasing levels of responsibility relative to training and experience. As the incumbent's individual skill level improves, they will work towards the following objectives based on the Supervisor’s direction.

The successful candidate must enroll and work towards completing the MEARIE Powerline Technician certification program by satisfying the hours and training requirements for certification. Once certified, the incumbent will be responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and construction of overhead and underground distribution lines. Candidates will be required to comply and be familiar with Company work practices and standards, operating rules, and regulations, as well as all pertinent OHSA regulations. This is a full-time unionized position.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES (Under the guidance of certified Journeyperson Powerline Technicians/Supervisors)

  • Construction, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of the electrical distribution system, including overhead and underground of various voltages (up to and including 27.6 kV)
  • Perform live line work on overhead and underground electrical distribution lines of up to 27.6 kV
  • Weekly standby duty; emergency and planned overtime
  • Ensure ESA permits and locate requirements are in place
  • Service and troubleshoot electrical-related issues
  • Ensure all work meets ESA and internal requirements
  • Responsible for completing work/service orders within the allotted time frames
  • Ensure all installation/service work is done according to quality standards
  • Report and communicate according to company procedures
  • Assist with work overflow as needed
  • Follow all company policies and procedures
  • Adhere to all company safety policies; report all near-miss and incidents immediately
  • Performance of all work within health and safety regulations, company standards, industry standards and applicable regulatory codes
  • Other duties as assigned

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Successful completion of a Secondary School Diploma – OSSD or recognized equivalent
  • Successful completion of the 2-year Powerline Technician Co-op College Program and in good academic standing
  • Enrolled with the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities as a registered Powerline Technician Apprentice
  • Willingness and ability to complete all requirements of the MEARIE Power Line Technician program
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills and a solid work ethic with a positive approach to work and coworkers
  • Willingness and ability to eventually perform regular emergency call-out and on-call duties and work under emergency conditions, with the willingness and ability to respond to a call-out and be on the work site within one hour of receiving the call
  • Possess and maintain a valid Ontario Drivers’ License with a clean abstract; Class AZ or ARZ preferred; DZ acceptable with the ability to obtain the ARZ within twelve (12) months
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification is a definite asset
  • All other duties as assigned
