UTILITY FLEET MECHANIC

Welland Hydro-Electric System Corp. (WHESC) is a progressive electric distribution utility delivering electricity in a safe & reliable manner while maintaining a high quality of service to meet the needs of our 25,000+ customers within the City of Welland.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Perform the duties of a licensed vehicle mechanic including hydraulic repairs and testing.
  • Oversees service, repairs, and maintenance of various vehicles, including trucks, vans, pick-ups, cars, hydraulic aerial devices, digger derricks, buckets, mobile equipment, and trailers to ensure vehicles operate safely and optimally.
  • Ensure work equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and replaced as per Corporate and legislative requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date monthly fleet management records and reports, including vehicle inventory, maintenance schedules, and records of maintenance work.
  • Take care of preventative vehicle maintenance and repair schedule/programs.
  • Perform legislated vehicle and equipment inspections and liaise with ministries regarding regulatory standards when required (licensing, registration, and inspections).
  • Assists with the tendering of vehicles and equipment, evaluates, and recommends final purchase and views equipment to ensure all required changes are identified prior to approval.
  • Identify stock required, requisition parts and services as required for routine and emergency maintenance activities.
  • Respond to emergency call-ins to perform emergency or unplanned repairs outside of normal hours.
  • Occasionally deliver and pick up vehicle parts.
  • Assist in the implementation of a comprehensive maintenance program to ensure the upkeep and functionality of all facilities (including but not limited to overhead doors, gates, onsite backup generation).
  • Identify facility maintenance issues and where capable, perform maintenance work.
  • Assist in the arrangement of third-party contactor services when maintenance or repairs require specialty workmanship.
  • Liaise with staff, contractors, and vendors to ensure timely completion of contracted repairs and projects.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Requires a minimum of a Grade 12 secondary school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a heavy-duty equipment mechanic is an asset.
  • Must have certification as a 310T Truck and Coach Technician. 310S Automotive Service certification is an asset.
  • Certification as a Fleet Utilities Mechanic or willing to obtain certification.
  • Experience with Freightliner and Cummins engines is an asset.
  • Requires a valid Class ‘D’ driver’s license with ‘Z’ Air Brake endorsement.
  • Computer skills to produce reports and documents. Knowledge of Microsoft Office software applications is an asset.
  • Have good verbal and written communication skills and have the ability to deal with the general public, vendors, and contractors.
