SUBSTATION ELECTRICIAN

Canadian Niagara Power Inc. (CNP), located in beautiful Fort Erie, is looking for a motivated, safety-focused problem-solver with a positive attitude to join our team. Our Substation Electrician will perform installation, inspection, and maintenance repair work on electrical equipment of extreme variety and complexity, as related to substations, to keep electricity flowing into the homes and business of our over 24,800 customers.

What this role does:

  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot a diverse variety of electric power distribution apparatus, protection, metering and control devices, electronic equipment, computer equipment, communications equipment, and wiring.
  • Perform electrical and mechanical tests and inspections to determine condition and operating characteristics of equipment, and record information.
  • Maintain and prepare a high quantity of monthly inspections, material lists, drawings, as-built prints, and requisitions.
  • Work on energized equipment up to 115kv. 
  • Perform switching as necessary, or as directed by the Control Room.
  • Operate transmission and distribution system equipment, including application of work protection procedures in accordance with the EUSA rule book.
  • Maintain records pertaining to maintenance and operation of the transmission and distribution system equipment.
  • Complete protection and control duties including wiring, installing, and maintaining panels and control equipment.
  • Provide training to junior team members to maintain a safe and skilled crew.  
  • Ensure all work assigned is performed efficiently, while demonstrating a personal commitment to the safety of co-workers, the public, oneself, and the environment.
  • Perform regular on-call duties as required, as well as other duties as reasonably assigned.

What makes you a successful candidate?

  • Minimum 2 years Substation Electrician working experience.
  • A Certified Engineering Technologist with a minimum of a three-year electrical engineering technologist diploma from an accredited community college program, or a Journeyperson Electrician holding a certificate of qualification (309A), or approved equivalent experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of equipment layout, substation structures, and Utility Work Protection Code.
  • Completion of MEARIE Substation Electrician Course or equivalent is an asset.
  • Capability to read and understand electrical blueprints and schematic drawings.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers, customers, & industry partners.
  • Physically able to perform the essential duties in all weather conditions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office. 
  • Ability to perform work in accordance with all relevant legislation, regulations, and other requirements to which the Company subscribes. 
  • Unrelenting commitment and passion to safety, ethics, and continuous improvement.
  • Valid Class G drivers’ license with the ability to obtain a D.
