As a key member of the Engineering and Continuous Improvement department, you will lead a diverse range of initiatives, including distribution infrastructure projects, electrification, continuous improvement, and grid modernization efforts. Below are the detailed responsibilities for this pivotal position. 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Plan, schedule, organize, report on status, and supervise the implementation of electrical distribution system projects including, budget estimates, detailed estimates, complete designs, obtaining approvals, liaising with other internal departments, municipalities, design and civil contractors, regulatory agencies, and customers to provide project information in a timely manner.
  • Lead the Engineering Services team by providing guidance and support to ensure a positive workplace culture that fosters collaboration, growth, and employee well-being.
  • Coordinate and participate in site plan reviews to identify in advance any potential challenges or hydro servicing requirements for all types of proposed developments or re-developments.
  • Ensure designs are completed with adequate lead times and within capital budget and KPI requirements.
  • Monitor project estimated vs. actual costs and review variance reports with team.
  • Conducts the process review and continual improvement of the design/build cycle to align with industry best practices.
  • Provides coaching, development, performance management, technical guidance, and advice.
  • Provide input into department goals and objectives.
  • Lead and/or participate in department projects and key initiatives to ensure quality and timely completion within budget.
  • Research, recommend and implement new or enhanced policies, procedures, and processes to improve operational effectiveness.
  • Ensure compliance to legislative, regulatory, and Health & Safety policies, procedures and standards.
  • Support quarterly forecasting of current year capital budget. Review project statuses with Design Technologists and prepare reports for senior management.
  • Assist with responding to deficiencies identified by the Electrical Safety Authority and internal/external staff after the project has been released for construction. Assist in developing/prioritizing action plans with various stakeholders, change orders, proposes changes and improvements.
  • Provide advice to customers and consultants, monitors department work progress to ensure proper customer service levels are maintained and deals with escalations.
  • Provide input to the department budgeting process in accordance with corporate timelines and complete department specific budgets as required.
  • Contribute to preparing evidence or other necessary documents for regulatory or financial reporting.
  • Participate in the tendering process by reviewing tenders, issuing tenders, and managing external contractors as required.
  • Ensure Conditions of Service, General Underground Manual and Subdivision Specifications Manual are up to date.
  • Ensure Engineering Software Systems such as AutoCAD, PLSCADD, Quadra, and other tools required for the department are up to date and accurate. 

Qualifications:

  • Electrical Engineering Degree or Diploma Certified as a C. Tech or C.E.T. with Ontario Association of Engineering Technicians and Technologists or higher.
  • Eng. designation and a registered member of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) in good standing would be an asset.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in electrical distribution system design, construction methods and distribution system components and applications, including experience in managing budgets
  • Demonstrated experience in a supervisory or lead role.
  • Experience in a unionized utility environment is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Material and Construction specifications, Subdivision specifications manual, Economic Evaluation Policy, Conditions of Service, Electrical Safety Code, Canadian Standards Association, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ministry of Transportation Book 7, Distribution System Code, Ontario Regulation 22/04.
  • You must have a valid Class "G" Ontario driver's license.
