Supervisor, System Control

Position Purpose:

The Supervisor, Control Room provides front line leadership, direction and support for the day-to-day operations of the control room. This role is accountable for the operation of the 24/7 distribution network to maintain an efficient and reliable supply of electricity. 

Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership

  • Accountable for the control room requirements for internal work protection planning to ensure timely execution of required work
  • Provides guidance, direction and establishes best practices for switching, load transfers and system configuration
  • Oversee the planning department operations and ensure efficient and seamless planning of internal and external stakeholder jobs.
  • Provides coaching, development, performance management, technical guidance and advice regarding system operations
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Strategic Planning and Leadership

  • Provides input to designs and recommends opportunities for enhancements
  • Provides input to department goals and objectives, and ensures they are achieved
  • Leads and/or participates in department projects and key initiatives to ensure quality and timely completion within budget
  • Researches, recommends and implements new or enhanced training, policies, procedures and processes to improve operational effectiveness

 

Compliance and Risk Management

  • Ensures timely follow-up on system deficiency reports
  • Ensures compliance to legislative, regulatory and Health & Safety policies, procedures and standards
  • Ensures logging, outage and trouble call information is recorded accurately

Relationship Management

  • Ensures all scheduled outages and emergencies are communicated to internal and external customers in a timely manner
  • Liaises with internal and external customers and government authorities in a pro-active manner to arrange for optimum effectiveness of operations

Resource Management

  • Administers shift schedules to ensure that there is adequate staffing for a 24/7 operation
  • Plans, organizes and supervises 24/7 activities of operational unit

 

Safety Leadership

  • Ensures all aspects of Company’s safety philosophy is executed and adhered to
  • Supports and promotes the corporate safety culture
  • Ensures all safety audits, work observations are completed and all incidents are investigated in a timely manner

 

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:

Education & Specialized Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree or College diploma related to Electrical Engineering or recognized equivalent
  • Registered member of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) or Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) in good standing (preferred)
  • Must hold and maintain a valid class G driver’s license
  • Excellent knowledge of System Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems
  • Excellent knowledge of customer and geographic information systems (GIS) and Outage Management System (OMS)
  • Excellent knowledge of the Electrical Utility safety rules and Utility Work Protection Code
  • Excellent knowledge of regulatory and governmental requirements (OEB Rules and Regulations, PIPEDA and OHSA)
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications

 

Experience

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of Control Room Operator experience, preferably in electrical distribution industry
  • Experience in a unionized utility environment an asset

 

Skills/Abilities/Competencies

  • Available to support a 24/7 operation, including travel as required
  • Available to be on a management on-call rotation.
  • Strong safety orientation and ability to lead change and engage, develop and motivate teams
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to provide practical and/or innovative solutions
  • Strong written and presentation skills, with the ability to convey information accurately and concisely
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and execute multiple projects and initiatives within established timelines
