Station Maintenance Technician / Apprentice Station Maintenance Technician

 

Position Purpose:

Reporting to the Supervisor, Station Sustainment the Station Maintenance Technician is responsible for the installation, commissioning, inspection, maintenance, repairs and data gathering of substation equipment including station facilities, switchgear, power transformers, capacitors and capacitor banks, circuit breakers, DC systems, switches, monitoring equipment, etc.  

 

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and repair municipal station (MS) and transformer station (TS) facilities, transformers, monitoring equipment, switches, switchgear, U.P.S. systems, dc systems, circuit breakers, capacitor banks, standby diesel generators, and other ancillary equipment.
  • Perform electrical and diagnostic tests on power and distribution transformers within the station, circuit breakers, dc systems to verify integrity of components and predict potential failures.  Maintain and update information on Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and other databases.
  • Commission and construct new station equipment.
  • Supervise contractors to ensure work is carried out in compliance with corporate standards and safety rules and regulations.
  • Perform thermographic scanning on electrical equipment to identify potential problems or flaws to minimize equipment failure. 
  • Liaise with external agencies such as Hydro One, equipment manufacturers, and consultants. 
  • Ensures safe and efficient operation of TS’s and MS’s through periodic documented inspections, reports and effects repairs on any deficiencies utilizing the CMMS.
  • Ensure all TS’s and MS’s are kept in a state of good repair and are clear from debris, weeds and clutter.
  • Evaluate job sites to identify and report on risks, and hazards and implements necessary safety precautions.
  • Ensure work is completed in compliance with ESA regulations as applicable to electrical distribution systems.
  • Conduct tailboard conference and safety orientation with staff, contractors, and project team as required.
  • Participate in training apprentices and students.
  • Organize and coordinate daily work schedules as directed by Supervisor.
  • Complete daily timesheets and maintains current CVOR log.
  • Responsible for an understanding and working knowledge and make all efforts reasonable to work in accordance with and ensuring work is done in compliance with the appropriate safety legislation, EUSR rules, Alectra policies and procedures and safe work practices that apply to the work while adhering to the internal responsibility system. Reports any unsafe conditions or observed unsafe work practices using Alectra procedures. 
  • Participate in the On Call rotation.

 

Skills & Qualifications:

Education & Specialized Knowledge

  • Requires a 2 or 3 year community college diploma in electrical technology
  • Combination of training and/or working experience in the electrical substation environment may be considered as an asset
  • Requires Journeyman Substation Electrician certification
  • OACETT certification C. Tech. Certified Engineering Technician or ability to earn OACETT certification within a year
  • Possession of a valid “DZ”” driver’s license or the ability to obtain a DZ license
  • Utility Work Protection Code
  • First Aid
  • Bucket Evacuation and Rescue

  

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience

  

Skills/Abilities/Competencies

  • Physically fit to perform position responsibilities and ability to work in adverse weather conditions
  • Capable of working in confined spaces
  • Demonstrated ability to proficiently operate all equipment associated with the trade
  • Demonstrated ability to work from work orders, specifications, standards and instructions, able to interpret prints, sketches and diagrams
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills with coworkers and members of the public to achieve positive outcomes for the company
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Requires working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements as it relates to individual, organizational and operational requirements
  • Requires working knowledge of EUSR rules, the utility work protection code and other related safety regulations
  • Strong understanding of ESA rules and regulations as applicable to the construction and maintenance of electrical distribution systems
