POWERLINE TECHNICIAN APPRENTICE

 

ABOUT THIS ROLE

Burlington Hydro Inc. is seeking a Powerline Technician Apprentice. Reporting to the Powerline Supervisor, this role is responsible for assisting the crew in the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems up to 27.6 kV. The apprentice will perform tasks aligned with their experience level, including maintaining tools and equipment, troubleshooting repairs, and assisting with system outage restorations. As the apprentice gains experience and training, they will take on more responsibilities under the guidance of the supervisor.

The successful candidate must enroll in and work towards completing the MEARIE Powerline Technician certification program, meeting the required hours and training for certification. Upon certification, the Powerline Technician will be fully qualified to maintain, troubleshoot, and construct overhead and underground distribution lines. This role must adhere to company work practices, standards, and all relevant OHSA regulations. This is a full-time unionized position

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES (Guided by Certified Powerline Technician Journeyperson and Supervisors)

  • Assist in the construction, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of the electrical distribution system, including both overhead and underground lines up to 27.6 kV
  • Perform live line work on electrical distribution lines up to 27.6 kV, following safety protocols and quality standards
  • Participate in weekly standby duty and respond to emergency or planned overtime as required
  • Ensure all necessary ESA permits and locate requirements are secured before beginning work
  • Service and troubleshoot electrical issues to ensure reliable power distribution
  • Complete work and service orders within designated timeframes, ensuring quality standards and adherence to ESA and internal requirements
  • Accurately report and communicate project progress according to company procedures
  • Support additional work demands as needed and assist team members with overflow tasks
  • Follow all company policies and procedures, particularly health and safety regulations, and report any near-miss incidents or safety concerns immediately
  • Perform all tasks in compliance with health and safety regulations, company standards, industry standards, and applicable regulatory codes
  • All other duties as assigned

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Successful completion of a Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or recognized equivalent
  • Successful completion of the 2-year Powerline Technician Co-op College Program and in good academic standing
  • Enrolled with the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities as a registered Powerline Technician Apprentice
  • Possess and maintain a valid Ontario Drivers’ License with a clean abstract; Class AZ or ARZ preferred; DZ acceptable with the ability to obtain the ARZ within twelve (12) months
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification is an asset

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL

  • Willingness and ability to complete all requirements of the MEARIE Powerline Technician program
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of pertinent industry regulations, rules, company policies and procedures, as well as industry best practices
  • Ability to meet the one-hour response time for emergency call-outs in accordance with OEB guidelines and company policy
  • Willingness to join the on-call rotation upon demonstrating competency and to respond as a secondary support for after-hours calls as required
  • Possess and maintain a level of physical fitness to perform job duties, including climbing and working confidently at heights, and a willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills
  • A strong work ethic with a positive approach to work and with coworkers
  • Energetic, motivated, and committed to maintaining an excellent safety and attendance record
