HR Generalist

Reporting to the Director of People and Culture, this position is the primary point of contact for Human Resources services and programs. The incumbent will assist in the development and implementation of human resources policies and programs by providing support and guidance to managers and employees in the areas of compensation, labour relations, employee relations, engagement, performance management, recruitment, training, and HRIS. The HR Generalist will also act as a business partner to the organization in the areas of employee development and succession planning as well as provide support with benefits administration. Note that this person may occasionally be required to work between both building locations.   

Note that we currently have one permanent and one temporary 12-month opening within the People & Culture Department at our Country Squire and Victoria Street locations.

  • Ability to deal effectively and courteously with employees, the public, and external organizations with demonstrated appreciation of need for confidentiality
  • Ability to conduct research, compile reports and prioritize work

Education/Knowledge

  • Post-secondary degree in Human Resources Management/Industrial Relations or equivalent education and experience
  • Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP)
  • Advanced understanding and working knowledge of relevant employment and workplace legislation
  • Advanced understanding of workers compensation and disability management
  • Basic knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety requirements as it relates to individual, organizational and operational requirements 

Experience

  • 5 years’ progressive human resources experience of labour relations, performance management and/or recruitment
  • Experience with an integrated electronic HR/Payroll system and advanced software skills in web-based internet/intranet
  • Experience in delivering HR solutions through design and application of process and technology and using relevant HR metrics
  • Experience working in a unionized environment and with the interpretation and administration of collective agreements
  • Valid Class “G” Driver’s Licence

Major (Primary) Responsibilities

  • Human Resource Business Partner:
    • Provide consultation, coaching and support to business units with respect to recruitment and performance management
    • Assist the Director of People and Culture with employee development and employee relations
    • Engage in recruitment, selection, and onboarding activities in support of the organization
    • Assist with the creation of job descriptions and be responsible for maintaining them
    • Maintain the records for pay equity and ensure updates are recorded properly and assist as required with the job evaluation process
    • Ensure employee information is maintained and kept confidential
    • Prepare reports and analyze data to educate the organization on trends and provide supporting information for HR initiatives
    • Support the identification of skill gaps and ensure appropriate training is provided
    • Develop, distribute and ensure consistent messaging of HR communications.
    • Assist with corporate engagement initiatives
    • Assist with the scheduling and promotion of employee training programs that focus on areas such as leadership and DEI
    • Create and update corporate policies to meet ESA expectations
    • Review and monitor benefits programs such as EAP and oversee claims management as needed for any short-and-long-term disabilities with direction
    • Respond to all lost time injuries and payments for the WSIB and act as the administrator for all incidents that occur at Enova
    • Provide on-going internal reporting metrics for injuries
    • Manage and maintain the internal organizational charts
    • Assist with the creation, development, training, updating and monitoring of a new HRIS system
    • Assist with change-management initiatives
    • Assist with on-going project work

  • Programs/Processes: Investigate and recommend new/improved HR related programs and services. Lead the implementation of approved projects. Improve HR processes and communicate changes. Assist with the administration of the HR information system through appropriate processes to maintain integrity of the data
  • Provision of Expert Advice: Counsel and confer with the Director of People and Culture and Senior Management on labour relations matters and HR policy issues that may have an impact on the organization. Ensure HR strategy is aligned and supports the business strategy
  • Labour Relations: Advise management to ensure that the Collective Agreement is administered in a fair and reasonable manner and promote a positive culture for union/management relations. Ensure labour relations matters are dealt with expediently and in a fair and consistent manner. Assist with grievances, arbitrations, and any issues that may arise. Assist with the preparation of negotiation meetings. Ensure compliance with HR policies and legislative requirements
  • Safety: Support Corporate Occupational Health & Safety initiatives by incorporating safe work practices into daily work routine and reporting any unsafe conditions or work practices to supervisor

  • Budgeting: Assist with the development of the Human Resource operating budget
