The Opportunity 

InnPower is growing! We're seeking a highly motivated Powerline Technician Journeyperson to perform maintenance, construction and repair of overhead and underground distribution systems, as well as the maintenance and operation of vehicles and equipment pertaining to the line trade. 

Responsibilities include, but not limited to: 

  • Operate 44kV, 27.6/16kV and 8.32/4.8kV primary systems utilizing bare hand, live line, rubber glove technique, and deenergized work methods.
  • Build, operate and maintain 120/240V and 600/347V secondary systems including sentinel light assets.
  • Perform the construction of overhead lines; setting and framing of poles, stringing and energizing conductors in accordance with InnPower standards and Regulation 22/04.
  • Perform the construction of underground circuits; installation of primary and secondary equipment, ducts, conductors, cables, terminations, splicing and the energization of conductors in accordance with InnPower standards and Regulation 22/04.
  • Operate underground electrical equipment for cable locating, fault finding and hi-pot
  • Perform regular stand-by duty (30-minute response time) and emergency call-outs.
  • Troubleshoot and analyze with the use of operating maps, service maps and experienced observation, line faults and power quality problems.
  • Trim trees around energized electrical power lines utilizing chain saws and other
  • Dig and excavate pole holes and splice pits.
  • Check, repair, clean and/or replace tools and equipment.
  • Operate, maintain and clean line vehicles, boom, bucket and jib.
  • Provide guidance for construction crews when in proximity to live conductors.
  • Maintenance of reclosures, voltage regulators and capacitors.
  • Install and replace domestic meters.
  • Assist line and forestry contractors when required.
  • Provide advice to customers regarding their services and energy use.
  • Assist in the training of Apprentices.
  • Assist in contract monitoring.
  • Perform other duties within the context of the job. 

Qualifications: 

  • Grade 12 high school diploma or equivalent.
  • MEA/E&USA/Ministry Apprenticeship Program completion Powerline Technician status.
  • Red Seal Certification of Qualification.
  • A valid Ontario Class 'DZ' Driver's Licence (must obtain 'AZ' within 5 months of hire) and possess an excellent driving record.
  • Standard First Aid /CPR, WHMIS and Utility Work Protection Code.
  • Good hearing, eyesight and hand/eye coordination.
  • Ability to safely operate line trade-related vehicles and equipment and fall arrest.
  • Ability to safely work at heights, confined spaces and other various job duties regardless of outdoor weather conditions or distractions.
  • Ability to work safely and effectively with hand tools and safely carry heavy equipment.
  • Good communication (written and verbal), organizational, record-keeping, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, maps, drawings and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to communicate with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public to maintain safe, effective and mutually respectful professional relationships.
  • Excellent knowledge of E&USA Safe Work practices.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in electrical distribution construction, inspection, operation, testing and maintenance.
