Hydro Distribution Engineer

Location: Windsor, ON (Hybrid)

Reporting to the Director, Hydro Engineering, the successful candidate will be a member of the team of engineers responsible for planning, designing, and maintaining a reliable hydro distribution system. This role ensures both short and long-term capacity and reliability objectives are met.

The successful applicant will be primarily responsible for System Planning, which includes system modeling and simulations such as load flow, voltage drop analysis, protection and control coordination, automation, and the integration of generation connections. This role also involves overseeing station operations and maintenance while identifying and recommending necessary upgrades to enhance system performance. 

The Hydro Distribution Engineer will develop operational requirements and design guidelines by analyzing the distribution system to ensure adequate capacity, reliability, and availability to meet customer needs. Key responsibilities include:

  • Identifying system enhancements and mitigation measures to support customer requirements.
  • Developing guidelines and plans to improve reliability through automation.
  • Conducting high-level project cost estimates and supporting project prioritization for inclusion in the capital plan.
  • Reviewing generator and large load connections to ensure they do not negatively impact system performance.
  • Ensuring proper coordination of protection and control settings between ENWIN’s system and Hydro One’s supply stations.
  • Providing technical support for station maintenance, establishing maintenance standards, and ensuring compliance with established procedures.

Potential additional responsibilities include:

  • Design and Standards: Designing, planning, and monitoring the construction and installation of distribution infrastructure to ensure safe, efficient, and effective power distribution.
  • Asset Management: Analyzing reliability data, tracking sustainment and enhancement projects, and supporting the annual capital budgeting process by proposing and monitoring projects that drive system improvements.

The successful applicant must have the following skills and competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with Professional Engineering designation or working toward obtaining P. Eng.
  • Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Power Systems, Electrical Machines or Protection and Controls is considered an asset.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of similar or related experience.
  • Experience with overhead and underground distribution systems, including load analysis, protection coordination and reliability improvements.
  • Familiarity with Ontario Energy Board (OEB) regulations, ESA (Electrical Safety Authority) standards, CSA standards, and Hydro One connection requirements.
  • Proficiency in load flow studies, short-circuit analysis, voltage regulation and Arc Flash analysis.
  • Experience with utility GIS platforms (e.g., ESRI ArcGIS) and CAD software (AutoCAD) for system design and mapping.
  • Knowledge of relays, reclosers, SCADA, and distribution automation technologies.
  • Understanding of renewable energy integration, net metering and battery storage impacts on the grid.
  • Ability to review engineering drawings, provide technical support to field crews, and perform site inspections.
  • Knowledge of asset lifecycle management, condition assessments, and outage analysis to improve system reliability.
  • Proficient in computer systems and software implementation experience working with a variety of computer systems including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and ERP systems.
  • Ability to prepare and deliver verbal and written reports.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member or leader of a team.
  • Valid Class ‘G’ driver’s license.

Salary Range for Qualified Candidates: $92,396.00 - $119,995.00
