Completion of Third or Fourth-Year Powerline Technician Apprentices Will Be Considered

Reporting to the Distribution Superintendent, this position is responsible for carrying out all aspects of the Powerline Technician trade, including the construction, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of the power distribution and street lighting systems. The incumbent is responsible for safe and efficient installations that limit power outages and minimize service disruptions. Note that you may be asked to work out of either Waterloo or Kitchener locations.    

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to communicate with fellow employees and the public in a courteous and tactful manner
  • Ability to interpret drawings, sketches and diagrams and to work from verbal and written instructions, specifications and standards
  • Ability to complete manual labour, work in underground vaults and physically able to climb poles and work at heights

Experience/Education     

  • Grade 12 Secondary School Graduation Diploma
  • Must be a Journeyman Powerline Technician holding a certificate issued by MEARIE or an Inter-Provincial Red Seal Certificate of Qualification (Ontario Trade Code 434A) or an approved equivalent. Will consider an Apprentice with 4000 hours of experience as a Powerline Technician who has successfully completed two years of line school
  • Must have a valid Class 'AZ' or ‘AZR’ driver's license. Will consider an applicant with a Class 'DZ' license provided that it is upgraded to Class 'AZR' within six months
  • Must become certified in Emergency First Aid and CPR within twelve months
  • Experience operating a variety of tools and equipment

Major (Primary) Responsibilities

  • Construct, maintain and troubleshoot underground and overhead electrical distribution system
  • Perform safe work on live voltages utilizing appropriate techniques and procedures to minimize outages
  • Ensure personal safety, the safety of co-workers and members of the public through proper use of safety procedures and working in compliance with regulatory requirements and procedures
  • Install underground cables, complete splicing and make cable terminations.
  • Respond to planned or unplanned calls to assess, troubleshoot and repair distribution equipment
  • Clean and maintain specialized equipment
  • Interpret work instructions for construction and sign off for compliance
  • Operate heavy equipment including radial boom derricks, bucket trucks, crane trucks and tension stringing machines
  • Performs switching, maintenance, verification and testing of isolated or energized distribution equipment

The successful candidates will be required to be available for emergency call-outs and occasional work on nights and weekends and will be required to successfully complete a Powerline Technician Apprenticeship in a program chosen by the employer.  Initial wage rate and grade will depend on qualifications and experience of the applicant.
