POSITION SUMMARY
The Engineer, Grid Modernization will play a key role in the management, planning and organization of work in the Engineering Department to support our vision of “Building a Utility Reimagined”. 

The incumbent is responsible for performing power system planning, modeling and analysis in the long-term, near-term, and operational planning horizons that will ensure the distribution system is robust, modern, and feasible.  They are also responsible for the reliability, stability, and efficiency of existing and planned power systems, developing solutions where necessary to address concerns and maintain compliance with applicable standards and criteria. 

The successful candidate should be familiar with grid modernization technologies and have an awareness of existing and developing regulatory drivers for grid modernization.  Other responsibilities include preparing load forecasts for Regional Planning with IESO and Hydro One.

KEY DUTIES

  • Support in the preparation and execution of Maintenance and Capital Plans.
  • Manage and coordinate station inspections, maintenance, repairs and disposal.
  • Visit and inspect site locations as required.
  • Coordinate the design, review and testing of all protection, control, and operational communication equipment/networks.
  • Approve schematic and wiring diagrams according to utility standards, IEEE, and CSA.
  • Manage the administration and maintenance of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, the Outage Management System (OMS) and Engineering Analysis software used to monitor and report outages.
  • Manage the implementation of hardware, software, and graphics updates, and assist with troubleshooting communications-related issues that result in loss of visibility of devices.
  • Aid with Operational Technology (OT) implementation and Cybersecurity initiatives.
  • Support the full life cycle of distribution automation devices (i.e., automated switches, reclosers, fault indicators, etc.).
  • Ensure record keeping and signoffs comply with industry regulations.
  • Assist in development of specifications and technical requirements for grid advancement and distribution automation solutions and equipment.
  • Support connection of distributed energy resources (DER’s) to the distribution system.
  • Validate outage entry records to ensure compliance with OEB tracking requirements and prepare Milton Hydro’s System Reliability Report.
  • Champion the latest developments in distribution system such as smart grid, microgrid, electrical vehicle charging, power system communications, SCADA, ADMS etc.
  • Perform, complete and update engineering and technical studies (i.e., long term system plan, fault analysis, poor performing feeders, etc.)
  • Adhere to all Occupational Health & Safety Act rules and regulations, the EUSA rule book, and Milton Hydro’s work practices and Health & Safety Management System.
  • Support control room systems and distribution system operation projects.
  • Responsible for development and maintenance of the Distribution System Master Plan.
  • Assists the Engineering, Operation and Metering departments with other duties, as required.
  • Provides support as needed during inclement weather situations. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to conduct complex engineering analysis related to utility grids, renewable energy, energy efficiency and storage including, when necessary, reliability and economic analysis for the distribution systems
  • Experience in using and/or interpreting outputs from CYME (or equivalent tool)
  • Proficient with engineering tools such as GIS, ArcMap and AutoCAD drawing tools
  • Experience with grid automation, autonomous self-healing, advanced protection & controls, ADMS modular implementation, DER (including EV chargers & utility scale batteries) integration & management, control room, SCADA & Communication system, and AMI data utilization.
  • Strong written and oral presentation skills and the ability to clearly present technical and financial analysis
  • Adept at collaborating and building relationships within the organization
  • Proven ability to perform short circuit calculations and configure and test protection & control settings
  • Working knowledge of cyber security concepts
  • Resourceful, self-starter, with track record of initiative and success
  • Ability to operate independently as well as part of a team, work on varying assignments as needed and manage multiple priorities with defined deadlines
  • Valid Class G Driver’s License in good standing required

 

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering
  • Eng. designation or eligible to register as a Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario
  • At least 5 years’ experience working in the distribution sector, with experience in electric utility engineering, grid planning
  • Experience in grid innovation / modernization technology deployment roles
  • Experience in distribution system design, commissioning, operations, asset management, and capital planning
  • Experience with resolving challenges such as needing to upgrade aging infrastructure to accommodate increasing DER penetration, bidirectional power flows, increased resilience & reliability, while accounting for prosumer interest, regulatory advancements, and constricted capital budgets
