For over 34 years, NBM Engineering has been a proud provider of premier engineering services to Hydro Utilities and Telecommunications companies. We are a trusted source for project management, engineering design, and field services. Our goal is to provide the highest standard of quality in creative, integrated, and forward-thinking solutions.

ROLE

The Stations Specialist will ensure that all substation construction and maintenance activities comply with technical standards, safety regulations, and approved designs. The Station Specialist will review drawings, conduct on‑site inspections, document progress, and work closely with contractors to identify and resolve any deficiencies, playing a crucial role in delivering safe and reliable station infrastructure.

KEY DUTIES

  • Create and refine station‐specific inspection checklists, forms, and processes to address gaps identified during routine audits.
  • Review civil and electrical station drawings before pre‐construction meetings to pinpoint potential constructability and compliance issues.
  • Participate in project kickoff meetings to identify critical station construction and installation tasks (e.g., foundation pours for transformers, bus support framing, grounding grid layout).
  • Conduct audits of station construction and maintenance activities to verify adherence to utility standards, industry rules & requirements, and occupational health & safety regulations; immediately report serious infractions and initiate stop‐work if necessary.
  • Ensure that all station work complies with approved drawings, technical specifications, and applicable regulations (e.g., O. Reg. 22/04 or equivalent jurisdictional codes).
  • Confirm that installed materials match the approved bill of materials.
  • Maintain a daily station site log that records activities, field‐driven changes, and photographic evidence of critical tasks. Follow the change‐order process to capture scope deviations.
  • Review and accept as‐built civil and electrical station drawings prepared by contractors and ensure they accurately reflect field conditions.
  • Witness and document testing and commissioning hold points (e.g., relay calibration, ground grid testing, insulation resistance testing, transformer oil sampling) and verify results against approved specifications.
  • Audit contractor adherence to public safety protection measures at station sites, including energized work zone barriers, temporary fencing, signage, and traffic/pedestrian control as required.
  • Verify that equipment nameplates, relay IDs, and transformer serials are correctly tagged and entered asset management systems in alignment with Hydro requirements.
  • Conduct final station inspections to identify construction or maintenance deficiencies and track corrective actions. Coordinate with contractors to resolve issues.
  • Review existing station maintenance records and recommend process improvements. Verify that preventive maintenance tasks adhere to technical standards.
  • Deliver on‑demand updates to project stakeholders, including daily logs, inspection reports, change‐order summaries, and photographic documentation. Maintain organized records for each station project.
