Supervisor, Stations (Whitby – 1 Opening)

WHY JOIN OUR TEAM?

Reports to Manager, Stations & Automation and will provide supervision, direction, and support to technical staff. Oversee the technical aspects of the substation and transmission station capital projects and maintenance programs for all new and existing substations and transformer station assets. The position has control over the effective and efficient deployment of resources to achieve specific targets in time and costs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical

  • Supervise, coordinate, and be responsible for the overall performance of the Department to ensure the completion of assigned projects within approved budgets and timelines to meet company goals.
  • Monitor, analyze, and adjust performance as required.
  • Provide direct daily technical support, detailed advice, direction, and expertise for the Department as well as to other departments within the company as required.
  • Supervise, coordinate and review the technical content of project designs and submissions prior to being forwarded to the Manager.
  • Be responsible for the maintenance of all transformer station and substations and all transformer station and substation related projects including component and full station upgrades or new station construction.
  • Demonstrate sound technical judgment, problem solving, non-regimented thinking and application of theory in balanced decision-making, in instructions or direction to staff.
  • Oversee and work closely with technical resources, both internal and external, in the planning, design, scheduling and implementation of work.
  • Develop and apply monitoring and review systems to assess work progress, effectiveness, and to consider alterations to processes and techniques to improve on these areas.
  • Recommend appropriate quality and work technique standards and assure their uniform application.
  • Encourage and receive staff input.
  • Be knowledgeable with and routinely apply policies, procedures, and external standards and requirements including but not limited to those of CSA, ESA, IHSA, NETA and OSHA as they relate to station maintenance and capital construction projects.
  • Coordinate work with other groups to minimize customer outages and switching requirements in order to complete work as efficiently as possible.
  • Keep abreast of current industry technology to ensure staff are kept up to date on applicable developments.

Project and Work Scheduling

  • Supervise, coordinate and be responsible for the efficient and effective use of resources in regard to safety, quality, and quantity of all work undertaken.
  • Ensure that appropriate tools, equipment, vehicles, work equipment, and personnel are available to complete the required work activities.
  • Schedule and manage all projects and work activities to remain within the constraints of the budget and other allocations. Administer and monitor the work of contractors that may be employed directly to assigned projects or that may be employed in general on other construction work, as required.
  • Assist the Manager in the planning and development of a suitable skilled labour force, transportation and work equipment requirements and specialized tools.
  • Report routinely, or as requested, verbally and/or in writing on the activities, performance and progress of all work assigned.
  • Available to be on-call or respond to station events, failures or problems outside of normal working hours.

Process Improvement

  • Monitor, oversee, and be responsible for ensuring that the project job planning and workflow activities follow policies and procedures. Adjust as necessary.
  • Initiate, develop, prepare and present for approval work plans, programs, initiatives, policies and procedures for the Department, and make recommendations on other policies and procedures when requested or appropriate to ensure that the station assets are well planned, effective and reliable.
  • Maintain a continuous improvement philosophy.

Financial

  • Prepare and submit annual Department budgets and expenditure forecasts (both capital & O, M & A), recommendations for inclusion in annual budget proposals, and other periodic financial forecasting documents, as required. Monitor, review and report on expenditures through periodic financial forecasting documents for the Department.
  • Assist in the preparation of estimates for capital station projects.
  • Monitor, control, and approve Department labour, expenditures, and work activities within the framework of approved budgets and guidelines.

Corporate, Customer and Workplace Relations

  • Collaborate with the Department Manager and with other Managers, Supervisors and staff, in areas of policy implementation. Review and make recommendations where appropriate.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to all external and corporate inquiries on project status and requests for appropriate assistance.
  • Maintain and promote, at all times, a positive, progressive and professional workplace, and the company, in its image and role in the community.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.), computer (PC) literacy, and a working knowledge of Computer Assisted Design (CAD) systems.
  • Possesses character, attitude and leadership skills desirable for supervision.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, project management and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a strong commitment to team building and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
  • Proven ability to manage projects.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • 3-year post-secondary diploma in Electrical or Electronics Engineering Technology
  • Eligible for O.A.C.E.T.T. designation as a Certified Engineering Technologist in the Province of Ontario in the Electrical discipline
  • MEARIE Journeyperson Sub-Station Electrician Certificate (Preferred)
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in an electrical utility environment with direct technical experience with substations
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a supervisory capacity.
  • Utility Work Protection Code certified.
  • Valid G Driver’s License.
