The Role

We are looking for a dedicated individual to join our team as a Journeyperson Powerline Technician. Reporting to the Supervisor, Powerline, this position plays a key role in the maintenance, troubleshooting, and construction of overhead and underground distribution systems. The successful candidate will participate in emergency call-outs and on-call rotations and must be willing and able to respond to emergency conditions, reporting to the work site within one hour of receiving a call. This position is being posted to fill an existing vacancy at Burlington Hydro.

This is an on-site position at 1340 Brant Street, Burlington, and is a unionized role governed by the collective agreement.

What You Will Do

  • Construct, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain the electrical distribution system, including overhead and underground lines of various voltages (up to and including 27.6 kV)
  • Perform live line work on electrical distribution lines up to 27.6 kV, following all safety protocols and quality standards
  • Respond to emergency call-outs and participate in on-call rotations, reporting to the work site within one hour of receiving a call
  • Ensure all required ESA permits and locate requirements are secured before starting work
  • Service and troubleshoot electrical issues to maintain reliable power distribution
  • Complete work and service orders within designated timeframes, ensuring compliance with ESA and internal quality standards
  • Accurately report and communicate project progress according to company procedures
  • Assist with workload overflow as needed to support team objectives
  • Follow all company policies and procedures, with a focus on health and safety, reporting near-miss incidents or safety concerns immediately
  • Perform all tasks in compliance with health and safety regulations, company standards, industry standards, and applicable regulatory codes
  • All other duties as assigned

What We Are Looking For

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma from an accredited institution is an asset
  • Certification as a Journeyperson Powerline Technician under the MEARIE Powerline Training program (or equivalent)
  • Possession of the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges & Universities Powerline Technician Certificate (or equivalent)
  • Full certification in the Utility Work Protection Code, or willingness and ability to obtain within six (6) months and maintain thereafter
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s Licence with a clean abstract; Class DZ required, Class ARZ preferred, or willingness to obtain within twelve (12) months
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification is an asset

What You’ll Need to Be Successful

  • Experience safely performing all aspects of electrical overhead and underground distribution system work up to 27.6 kV
  • Physical fitness to perform job duties, including climbing and working at heights, and the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to meet the one-hour response time for emergency call-outs in accordance with OEB guidelines and company policy
  • Willingness to join the on-call rotation after demonstrating competency and respond as a secondary support for after-hours calls as required
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing electrical distribution systems, with technical knowledge of distribution equipment
  • Working knowledge of industry regulations, company policies, procedures, and best practices
  • Knowledge of Electrical Utility Safety Rules, Book 7 Traffic Manual, and Health and Safety protocols
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Positive work ethic and collaborative approach, fostering a supportive workplace culture
  • Energetic, motivated, and committed to maintaining excellent safety and attendance records
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, etc.)
