Are you a dedicated professional passionate about fostering a safe and healthy workplace environment?

As a Specialist in Health and Safety, you will lead initiatives to educate and support managers and employees on health and safety programs and standards, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and legislative requirements.

What you’ll do

Program Development and Implementation:

  • Support the development and implementation of corporate health and safety programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain policies, programs, procedures, and guidelines to ensure consistent work practices across the organization by gathering relevant information from legislative bodies, other employers, and Alectra Utilities network operation groups.

Incident Management and Risk Assessment:

  • Track, report, and evaluate incidents, consulting with managers and supervisors on preventive recommendations, risk evaluations, and follow-up actions.
  • Assist with investigations and risk assessments, identifying opportunities for program enhancement and increased education.
  • Analyze internal and external data on occupational incidents, injuries, and illness trends to recommend proactive strategies.

Compliance and Expertise:

  • Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulatory standards and adherence to industry standards, best management practices, and Alectra Utilities policies and programs.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to internal stakeholders, including Joint Health and Safety Committees and training initiatives.

Audit and Certification:

  • Support coordination and implementation of internal and external audit activities, participating in efforts to achieve certification and standardization.
  • Participate in the preparation, conduct, and follow-up of internal and external audits of the OHSE Management System.

Education and Communication:

  • Coordinate and deliver safety starts, safety meetings, and supporting documentation.
  • Investigate, review, evaluate, and respond to inquiries from employees, the JHSC, managers, supervisors, and external parties regarding the company’s occupational health and safety policies, programs, and practices.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of health and safety programs through site visits, spot assessments, and audits.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline or automate processes to continuously improve service delivery.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assist managers/supervisors and the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) in conducting OHSE-related investigations, leading major investigations as required.
  • Analyze the impact of changes to legislation and Ministry of Labour enforcement strategies, rulings, prosecutions, and convictions, making compliance recommendations to management.
  • Provide technical expertise in the planning, design, and implementation of projects and key initiatives.

Other Duties:

  • Perform other duties as required to support a safe and compliant workplace environment.

Who you are

Education & Specialized Knowledge

  • Degree or Diploma in relevant discipline preferably Occupational Health and Safety
  • Journeyperson level certification as a Power Line Technician is considered an asset
  • Post-secondary education in a related field, such as occupational health and safety; or relevant engineering, technical or construction qualifications/certifications considered an asset
  • Professional designation, or the ability to attain designation within five years of the date of hire considered an asset (e.g., Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP), or Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Utility Safety Administrator (CUSA)
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulations
  • Knowledge of the Electrical Utility Safety Rules, Utility Work Protection Code and generally accepted electrical utility sector safety policies, best practices, and standards
  • Strong computer skills; proficient in the use of office productivity and collaboration tools

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a Health and Safety Practitioner
  • Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience as a Power Line Technician journeyperson is considered an asset
  • Experience in a unionized utility environment an asset

Skills/Abilities/Competencies

  • Solid problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to provide practical and/or innovative solutions to complex technical issues
  • Strong written and presentation skills, with the ability to explain technical information in an organized and concise way
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and execute multiple projects and initiatives within established timelines
  • Ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Must hold and maintain a valid class “G” driver’s license
