SENIOR ACCOUNTANT

Greater Sudbury Utilities Inc. (GSU) is a diversified, community-owned corporation focused on excellence, innovation, and growth. The GSU group of companies provides leadership in energy distribution, alternative generation, water heater rental products, and leading-edge telecommunications technologies and services.

Reporting to the Controller or Manager of Regulatory and Management Systems, the successful candidate will serve as a key financial and accounting resource to leaders and departments across the organization. This position combines hands-on accounting responsibilities with proactive analysis, sound judgement, and leadership of projects and process improvements.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Managing assigned general ledger activities, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, variance analysis, financial reporting and supporting working papers
  • Preparing timely, accurate financial information and translating results into meaningful insights, risks, opportunities and recommended actions
  • Working closely with interested parties to understand business activities, anticipate financial and reporting needs, and bring forward practical solutions
  • Identifying, initiating, prioritizing and leading system, reporting, control and business-process improvements, while consulting with the Manager for feedback, recommendations and support before implementing agreed solutions
  • Acting, under the Manager’s oversight, as the primary contact for external auditors in assigned areas and preparing accurate, audit-ready working papers and reconciliations for supervisory review
  • Supporting compliance with internal controls, corporate policies, applicable accounting standards and OEB and other regulatory requirements

The successful candidate will:

  • Possess a university degree in Commerce, Business or an equivalent discipline, with a specialization in Accounting, and a recognized professional accounting designation (CPA)
  • Have a minimum of five years of progressively responsible accounting experience
  • Have strong knowledge of accounting practices, financial reporting, internal controls, advanced accounting systems and applicable accounting and regulatory requirements
  • Demonstrate an aptitude for working with systems and data, along with curiosity and eagerness to learn and develop skills in advanced Excel and business-intelligence tools such as Power Query, Power Pivot and Power BI.
  • Be self-motivated and proactive, someone who identifies what needs to be done develops recommendations and moves work forward without waiting for detailed direction
  • Demonstrate sound judgement, analytical ability, resourcefulness and creative problem-solving
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships, provide guidance and lead through collaboration

Hours of work are 35 hours per week, with an annual salary starting at $97,570 with progressions up to $103,139. GSU offers a competitive benefit package including a defined benefit pension plan with OMERS, and a hybrid work schedule may be available upon completion of a probationary period.
