ABOUT THE ROLE

The Operations Manager provides leadership and assumes overall responsibility for the construction and maintenance of the distribution system, along with its affiliated non-regulated business.  This position will oversee the construction, maintenance, and use of the overall electrical distribution system, including subdivision development, planned capital projects, new services, and customer-driven projects to ensure technical competence and compliance with the latest standards, policies, and regulatory requirements.  This position must be able to support innovation through forward-thinking leadership.

The successful candidate will be an experienced utility professional with strong leadership, operational, and project management skills, demonstrated success in a unionized environment, and a commitment to safety, customer service, and continuous improvement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide leadership and accountability for health and safety performance across all operational activities.
  • Lead day-to-day operations, including Lines and Stores, while fostering a strong culture of safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead, coach, and develop employees while managing workforce planning, performance, and labour relations in a unionized environment.
  • Oversee the construction, maintenance, and operation of the electrical distribution system, including subdivisions, new services, relocations, rebuilds, and capital projects.
  • Manage operational and capital projects, including budgeting, scheduling, contractor coordination, and contract administration.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable safety, regulatory, and utility standards.
  • Lead emergency response and outage restoration activities as required.
  • Manage operational assets including fleet, equipment, materials, and inventory.
  • Collaborate with customers, municipalities, contractors, and regulatory agencies to support safe and reliable utility operations.

EDUCATION/PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary education in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Utility Operations, Business Administration or a related discipline. A valid Master Electrician Licence is preferred; candidates who do not currently hold the licence must be willing to obtain it within an agreed timeframe.
  • Professional designation such as P.Eng., C.E.T., or PMP would also be considered an asset.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in electrical distribution, utility operations, construction, or a related field, including 5 years of demonstrated supervisory or management experience.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical distribution systems, construction and maintenance practices, utility operations and applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects, budgets, contractors, operational resources, and employees.
  • Strong leadership, communication, decision-making, organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s licence in good standing and an acceptable driver’s abstract. 

2026 job rate: $ 119,800 to $140,941
