Wataynikaneyap Power PM Inc., (the “Project Manager”) a wholly owned subsidiary of FortisOntario Inc., acts as the Project Manager of Wataynikaneyap Power LP (“Wataynikaneyap Power”). Wataynikaneyap Power is a licensed transmission partnership equally owned by 22 First Nation communities (51%), in partnership with Fortis Inc. (49%). To connect remote First Nation communities to the electrical grid, Wataynikaneyap Power will develop and operate approximately 1,800 kilometers of 230 kV, 115 kV, and 44 kV lines in northwestern Ontario. Located in our Thunder Bay office, the Project Manager is currently recruiting for a: 

MANAGER, HEALTH & SAFETY 

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing on-going leadership, direction and support at the corporate and operational levels to establish, manage and monitor performance associated with Health and Safety. Candidate will build and promote a strong culture of safety compliance and ensure safety awareness at all levels of the organization by developing, implementing and maintaining effective safety standards systems and tools, while continuously developing innovative system and solutions to meet organizational changes. 

The candidate will be required to travel to and coordinate on-site inspections, audits, work observations and conduct incident investigations related to project activities; develop trends and root causes to create corrective actions plans to prevent reoccurrences. Develop, implement and maintain the Company’s Health and Safety Management Systems (“HSMS”) and ensure that documentation, with respect to HSMS, is maintained and consistent with OHSAS 18001 as amended. Acts as Company’s Health and Safety Management Representative. 

Overall responsibility for all aspects of Health and Safety strategic planning as it relates, but not limited to, policy, procedures, emerging trends and issues, systems and standards/regulatory compliance. This position will provide “in the field” leadership, and guidance in Health and Safety risk management to all trades related to electrical transmission and distribution. 

The successful candidate must have the following minimum attributes, skills and qualifications:

  • Related post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years’ relevant experience with an advanced Corporate and Capital Project Site Construction Health and Safety background.
  • Field/site experience within electrical utility operations and knowledge of OHSAS 18001 Standards.
  • Experience working with First Nations; First Nation language considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated communication skills with the ability to provide feedback and receive feedback effectively; explain, advocate, write, express and present facts and ideas in a clear and convincing manner to a variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to actively listen and lead incident investigations and audits.  
  • Project management experience would be considered an asset in this position.
  • An unrelenting commitment and passion to Health and Safety in the workplace.
  • Must hold and maintain a Valid Ontario “G” license with a clear driving abstract.
