Power Distribution Engineer

Newmarket – Tay Power Distribution Ltd. (NT Power) is seeking a talented, highly motivated Power Distribution Engineer to join our team of forward thinkers. Reporting directly to the COO, the Power Distirbution Engineer will provide technical and business support to our Engineering and Operations Teams and work primarily at our head office in Newmarket, Ontario. In addition to strong engineering experience and expertise, interested candidates should have knowledge of the legislative and regulatory framework of Ontario’s electricity and energy sectors and a keen interest in the changing dynamics of the industry. We are looking for a a candidate with good understanding of the operations of an increasingly technically complex industry. He or she will be a consensus builder and excellent communicator, with strong people skills; an innovative problem-solver with a strong technical aptitude; and someone who is forward-thinking, flexible, adaptable, goal-oriented, customer-focused and motivated to excel.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting management and technical teams in day-to-day planning, operations and maintenance of the distribution system;
  • Development, implementation and monitoring of distribution system plans, risk and asset management to support operational efficiencies and ensure reliability;
  • System planning, including system load forecasting; Protection & Control and load flow studies; system reliability analyses, etc.;
  • Ensuring safe connection of customers to the distribution system; conducting timely Connection Impact Assessments and offers to connect;
  • Development, operation and maintenance of key computer systems and engineering tools (i.e SCADA, GIS, Asset Management System, Distribution Systems Analysis, Outage Management); 
  • Leading or participating in critical projects, including several related to engineering systems, microgrids, etc.
  • Participating in management on-call roster.

Qualifications: Successful candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in applied sciences or engineering (electrical) from an accredited university and P.Eng. designation; at least 3 years’ working experience in most of the following areas: system planning, line or substation design, protection and control, power system communication, SCADA, project management, budgeting and Regulation 22/04, operations, and construction within electrical utility industry; advanced knowledge of technical specifications and standards; and a demonstrated commitment to safety, high ethical and quality standards.

Proficiency with software applications (SCADA, GIS systems, microprocessor relays); experience with Survalent, ESRI-ArcFM, AutoCAD, Arcmobile, AUD, SPIDAcalc, CYME, DNP3 protocol, QUADRA, Access database will be an asset.

Candidates must have a Class G driver's licence in good standing and an excellent driving record.
