Position Purpose:

This position is accountable for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the electrical equipment which supplies the power to the system. 

Responsibilities:

  • Repair, maintain transformers/switchgear/switches and related equipment in the shop and field.

E.g. LVS, PMH, PVI, SF6, vacuum, ABS, LIS switchgear.

Know and follow procedures:

    • Handling material
    • Testing & test equipment.
    • Painting and preparation.
    • Maintenance procedures.
    • Use of safety equipment.
    • SF6 gas requirements & safe handling.

 

  • Substation maintenance – thorough knowledge of:
    • Transformer testing and use of testing equipment
    • Breakers – operation & maintenance of all in system.
    • Switches – e.g. (LIS, ABS, VAC, SF6)
    • Electrical wiring – low and high voltage.
    • Cable terminations – high and low voltage.
    • Know and follow test records – PC-11 Trans test, maintenance of substation form.
    • Make and understand the need for proper records.
    • Switching – initiate and implement switching procedures and instructions.

 

  • PCB policies and checks
    • understand need for proper care, storage and records.
    • respond to oil spills (containment & clean-up).
    • requirements for transportation, testing, & handling.

 

  • Subgrade vault maintenance
    • electrical wiring
    • pumps and drains
    • heaters
    • know and understand Confined Space procedure – thorough knowledge of gas detector and rescue devices.
    • vault structure maintenance - e.g. access into
    • power washing

 

  • Network Systems – thorough knowledge of:
    • protector testing & switching requirements
    • theory of operation
    • different types of network systems in Brampton
    • City Center Transfer Scheme

 

  • Computer skills – must understand and be able to use computer terminal pertaining to
    • substation department functions.

 

  • Electrician duties – be able to:
    • wire electrical circuits up to 600 V
    • install conduit: PVC, EMT, etc.
    • understand basic electrical code and be able to apply it to given tasks
    • install electrical apparatus
    • knowledge of use of Electrical Code Book
    • customer service repairs & upgrades

 

  • Testing for System Reliability
    • swgr/switch buss insulators
    • Various components e.g. multi-taps, elbows, etc.

 

  • Motor operated switches; maintenance & set-up
    • Motor types – G & W, S&C
    • Switch types – LIS, ABSM, VAC, SF6

 

  • Underground System Maintenance
    • U/G loop & radial feed switching
    • Switchgear/transformer maintenance, repair, and replacement, including related components.
    • Above and below grade vault construction and maintenance.

 

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Able to obtain Electrician License 309A
  • Must possess a College Diploma from an accredited Electrical Program at the College or
  • University level and have a sound knowledge of A.C. and D.C. Theory.
  • Applicants must pass a written examination before entering the M.E.A. Substation Electrician Program.
  • Experience in Substation Maintenance, wiring, welding and around energized equipment is required.
  • Applicants must have good communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Applicants must possess a valid Driver’s License for the Province of Ontario.
  • Wage level will be based on the applicant’s past experience.
