Primary Duties

Constructs, operates and maintains the electrical distribution system substations and related equipment including transformers, breakers, switchgear, etc. Also constructs, operates and maintains underground infrastructure including transformer facilities (e.g. vaults, padmounted), underground cabling and associated equipment. Performs switching operations, troubleshoots problems, and responds to emergency situations. Provides design review and implements changes in the field as necessary. Maintains equipment, accurate records, and documentation as required. Conducts all work in a safe manner and in adherence to safety rules and pertinent legislation.

Education, Certification and Other Qualifications Required

• Possession of a Journeyperson Certification of Qualifications for Substation Electrician OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience may be considered if it is related to electrical substations in a utility environment.

• If not currently certified, must have the ability to follow through to successful completion the Substation Electrician 3-Level training and practical program leading to a Certification of Qualifications for Substation Electrician (a 3-year training program).

• Possession of a “DZ” driver’s licence or the ability to obtain a “DZ” licence within six months of employment with training provided by the employer.

• Certified as an Electrician, or Underground Power Cable Maintainer would be considered an asset.

• The following are considered assets, and if not in possession will be required to be obtained through the employer: Utility Work Protection Code training, Electrical Utility Safety Rules training, Radial Boom Derrick (RBD) 0 to 8-ton certification, Transportation of Dangerous Goods certification, First Aid/CPR certification, confined space entry training.

• Experience with and/or knowledge of various equipment associated with SCADA systems is desirable.

• Good working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and associated regulations and rules is an asset.

• Ability to make decisions and work well under pressure individually and as part of a team.

• Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing. Good mathematical skills.

• Organized, resourceful, self-motivated, and reliable.

Special Working Conditions/Conditions of Employment

Obtain and maintain the required licences, trades, certification and/or professional designation associated with the position. Required to perform after-hours on-call duties on a rotational basis and respond to emergency calls within a designated timeframe.
