Engineering Supervisor  

 

POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the Manager of Engineering, you are accountable for the day to day maintenance and new infrastructure needs of the utility, along with day-to-day operational supervision of the Engineering Department. This position is tasked with developing procedures and investigating technologies that will balance the needs of equipment longevity and cost effectiveness. To ensure that new capital projects associated with new infrastructure and maintenance of the distribution system are designed in accordance with stringent safety and design standards, ensuring long-term plans and expenditures are appropriate. The incumbent in this position will need to ensure that projects have been constructed/completed in the field as designed prior to accepting them into the distribution system. Development/preparation of capital works programs/budgets, operating budgets and compilation of accurate system models, outage management/customer relations software, maintenance regimes and system planning are also major components of this position. 

KEY DUTIES:

  • Excellent management, leadership, problem solving, negotiation, communication and analytical skills
  • Excellent understanding of construction practices, high voltage systems, electrical distribution, protection and coordination, metering and equipment specifications
  • Responsible for developing, organizing and scheduling new infrastructure and maintenance regime in order to improve system reliability
  • Responsible for providing master planning services and system refinements with the aim to improve system performance
  • Establish, implement, and monitor various contracts
  • Supervise equipment installations; align cost control and profitability with yearly budgets
  • Remain current on technology and techniques via education and training
  • Investigate alternatives, perform cost-benefit analyses, and anticipate areas of potential difficulty
  • Co-ordinate and schedule the activities of Engineering Technicians
  • Authorize, review and amend designs, correspondence, and estimates while implementing departmental procedure and standards consistent with Conditions of Service
  • Approve transformer specification drawings, material commitments, municipal consents, joint-use permits and power supply permits
  • Develop work plans and deliverables for each project. Check designs for accuracy and relevance
  • Supervise Engineering Technicians, including safety, general administration, performance management, training, and development of employees
  • Counsel and discipline employees on acceptable workplace behaviors and performance
  • Lead with a safety first mentality and participate in safety meetings; ensure compliance with, WSIB, health and safety legislations.
  • Complete field visit reports, conduct safety field visits and traffic control plans
  • Review and assign projects and job specific work to employees and contractors
  • Provide guidance to employees when they are uncertain of standard procedure or when a project does not fall within the typical parameters
  • Answer inquiries and respond to customer complaints
  • Oversee the preparation and update of all system analysis (DESS, CYMTCC) and outage management (DESS, TVD avalanche) tools
  • Manage the creation and updating of in-house protocol to ensure that operational systems are reliable and accurate
  • Ensure that protection and control systems within the distribution system function and coordinate across the entire network
  • Formulate maintenance and capital improvement programs/recommendations via the compilation of a yearly system analysis report
  • Ensure correct installation, testing and maintenance of substation equipment
  • Ensure incoming transformers are designed to spec, recorded and tested
  • Assist VP of Engineering and Operations and Manager of Engineering with the management of the Operations Division as well as the formulation, project management, and implementation of Capital and Departmental budgets
  • Participate in the formulation of strategic goals and objectives for the division
  • Approve permits, correspondence, invoices, and inventory commitments; Authorize contract work
  • Resolve work problems and recommend work measure to improve productivity
  • Report and calculate monthly variance reports
  • Meet with Alliance partners and schedule upcoming material requirements 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • University degree in Electrical Engineering or Applied Science
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer
  • 2-5 five year’s technical design experience and five years management experience
  • Knowledge of AM/FM computer aided drafting
  • Valid and clean class “G” driver’s license and be able to maintain the same
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Current knowledge on pertinent BHI policies and procedures
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and a positive approach to work and co-workers
  • Excellent attendance record
